How To Clean A Cuisinart Coffee Maker (Easy-to-Follow Guide)
Maybe your like
Keeping your Cuisinart coffee maker clean is quick, easy, and affordable. There’s no reason not to do it!
Regular cleaning of your coffee maker is crucial. Not only does it ensure your machine far outlasts its warranty, but it guarantees the flavor of your coffee never suffers throughout that lifetime. Sure, it’s not the most fun part of being a coffee lover, but it doesn’t need to be an arduous chore.
Today, I’ll teach you the easiest (and cheapest) way to clean and descale your Cuisinart brewer, using supplies you probably already have on hand.
How To Clean And Descale A Cuisinart Coffee Maker
You can’t brew the best-tasting coffee with a dirty coffee maker. Limescale and coffee residue impart off-flavors and interfere with water flow and extraction. Luckily, cleaning any generic coffee maker is pretty easy. And Cuisinart machines, which have automated cleaning cycles and alerts, are easier than most!
What You Need
- Water
- Distilled white vinegar (amount varies by machine)
- A nonabrasive dishcloth
- Dish soap

How Often Should You Descale Your Coffee Maker?
Most Cuisinart models have a Clean light on the front that will begin to flash to let you know when it is time to clean. For the single-serve coffee makers, all the lights will flash in sequence upon being turned on to indicate that descaling is necessary.
Alternatively, every 3 to 6 months is a good benchmark for descaling your Cuisinart coffee maker. Precisely how often you need to clean your machine depends on your use and water hardness (1).
Is Descaling Solution Better Than Vinegar?
I like using vinegar to clean my coffee maker because it is affordable and effective. The downside, however, is you may need to run an extra rinse cycle to fully remove any residual smell. Purpose-made descalers also tend to be more effective, so it may be worth buying one if your coffee maker is exceptionally filthy.
Deep Cleaning Your Cuisinart Coffee Maker: Step-By-Step
This cleaning process works for all of the best Cuisinart coffee makers on the market, with only slight modifications depending on whether you are using a 4-to-14-cup Cuisinart coffee maker with a coffee pot, a single-serve K-cup Cuisinart coffee maker, or a two-in-one Cuisinart dual coffee maker.
Step 1: Disassemble Your Machine
Turn off the coffee maker. If you have just brewed coffee, remove the paper filter and dispose of the old coffee grounds.
Empty the water reservoir and take out all removable parts: the charcoal water filter, carafe, and filter basket. Removing the water filter is important to prevent damage and lingering odors from the descaling process (2).
Pro tip: This is a good time to check the condition of your charcoal filter. If it’s more than 2 months old, consider a replacement.
Step 2: Make The Descaling Mixture
The simplest descaling mixture to make at home is two parts fresh water two one part white vinegar. Make enough to fill your water reservoir. For example, a standard 12-cup Cuisinart coffee machine holds 60 ounces, so you will need 20 ounces of vinegar and 40 ounces of water.
Fill the reservoir with the vinegar and water solution.
Step 3: Start The Cleaning Cycle
Put a large bowl or jug under the coffee outlet. Press and hold the Clean button, releasing when the Clean button light starts flashing. This starts the Clean Mode cycle, which runs automatically in Cuisinart machines.
It will emit five beeps upon completion, and the machine will turn off. If the Clean light turns on again, it is still detecting some residual limescale, and you may have to repeat this step.
For a single-serve Cuisinart: Place a cup on the drip tray. Press and hold both the 6 oz. and 8 oz. buttons for two seconds to initiate the descaling process. Discard the contents of the cup and repeat this process three times with a fresh mixture in the water reservoir each time.
Pro tip: It is safe to pour the remnants of the diluted white vinegar mixture down the sink.
Step 4: Rinse
Fill the water reservoir with clean water and run at least one brewing cycle with no coffee grounds. Run a second cycle if you smell any vinegar.
Pro tip: If you are concerned about lingering vinegar, run a brew cycle with cheap or stale coffee grounds, and then discard the coffee.
Step 5: Wash The Removed Parts
Unplug the electric coffee maker and let it cool.
The coffee filter basket, carafe, and lid can be hand-washed in warm soapy water or on the top rack of your dishwasher. Wipe the hot plate, under the filter holder, and the exterior case of the base unit with a soft, damp cloth to remove any remaining coffee stains or loose coffee grounds.
For a single-serve Cuisinart: Pull the capsule holder out by opening the brewing chamber. Twist and pull out the funnel from the capsule holder. Use a paperclip or similar to clean out the exit needle and piercing needle. Use a sponge and warm soapy water to hand-wash the funnel, filter, and filter cup as well as to wipe down the drip tray and the exterior.
Pro tip: Don’t use tough, abrasive cleaners like steel wool or cloths on the heating plate as this will cause damage.
Step 6: Reassemble The Coffee Maker
Allow everything to air dry, or gently wipe the machine and its parts with a soft cloth. Reassemble the components, reinstall the charcoal water filter, and refill the water reservoir with fresh water.
Cleaning A Cuisinart On Initial Start-Up
The initial cleaning you perform when setting up your Cuisinart coffee maker is different from every following cleaning. Here’s a quick rundown, which should also be detailed in your user manual.
Step 1: Install the charcoal water filter into the water tank.
Step 2: Fill the water reservoir with fresh water.
Step 3: Plug in the coffee maker, and turn it on. Set the coffee carafe (or a cup for single-serve machines) in place.
Step 4: Run the brew cycle without any ground coffee.
Step 5: Discard the hot water, rinse the carafe, and refill the water tank. You’re ready to make coffee!
Final Thoughts
Keep your coffee maker clean to guarantee the quality of your coffee and the longevity of your machine. Running a cleaning cycle might not be as fun as brewing and enjoying a fresh pot, but it’s just as important. Just follow this guide to cleaning your Cuisinart every few months, and you’ll be enjoying delicious brews for years.
FAQs
How do you get vinegar taste out of coffee maker?
Run the brew cycle using fresh water to get any leftover vinegar taste or odor from your coffee maker. You may need to do it two or three times. If you’re particularly concerned about coffee flavor, finish up by running a brewing cycle with coffee (ideally cheap or old beans) and discarding the result.
How can I use baking soda to clean a coffee maker?
You can use a baking soda solution as an alternative to vinegar to clean the machine. Make a mixture of three parts warm water and one part baking soda, add it to the water reservoir, and run the brewing cycle. Baking soda mixed with just enough water to form a paste can also be an effective scrub for removing any coffee stains from the exterior of the coffee maker or carafe.
Can I descale with lemon juice?
You can descale with store-bought or freshly squeezed lemon juice if you don’t have vinegar or find its odor offensive, and lemon juice from concentrate is just as effective as fresh. Use equal parts lemon juice and cold water in place of the vinegar solution mix. The only reason I don’t recommend this is that lemons tend to be expensive.
