When your Nespresso machine isn’t working well or if your coffee has an "off" flavor, then it’s time to clean and descale it. While regular cleaning keeps your coffeemaker looking great, descaling will clean out any residue built-up inside. We spoke with Raymond Chiu, a professional home cleaner, to learn how to put your machine into the descale setting and routinely clean any Nespresso machine!

How to Descale a Nespresso Machine

Fill your Nespresso machine’s reservoir with descaling solution or a mix of vinegar and water. Switch your Nespresso machine to descale mode, and run the solution through your machine. Once it finishes, run clean water through the machine to rinse it out.

Remove the capsule container and dump all the used capsules into your trash. Then, pour out any liquid left in the drip tray. Replace the components and turn your machine on.[1]
    • The capsule container and drip tray are usually located on the side or back of your Nespresso machine, but check your model’s instruction manual for its exact location.
  2. Step 2 Fill the reservoir... 2 Fill the reservoir with either descaling solution or white vinegar. Nespresso officially recommends their descaling solution, but many people have had success using distilled white vinegar in a pinch. For the homemade solution, fill the reservoir with equal parts water and vinegar.[2] Otherwise, Raymond Chiu, a professional house cleaner, recommends you "Fill the water tank with the suggested ratio of water and descaling product on the packaging, which is about 3 parts water, 1 part descaler.[3]
    • Nespresso officially recommends pouring in a pack of descaling solution and adding about 17 fluid ounces (500 mL) of water.[4]
    • Alternatively, you may make a citric acid solution. Mix 2 tablespoons (22.8 g) of citric acid with about 34 fluid ounces (1,000 mL) of water. Then, add it to your tank.[5]
    • If you have hard water at home, then use distilled water in the reservoir for a more effective cleaning.

Typically, you’ll press and hold down specific buttons to start the cycle.[6] Chiu states that the buttons will start blinking after about 3 seconds when you enter the descaling cycle.[7]
    • To clean a Nespresso Vertuo machine, hold the top button down for around 7 seconds.
    • For the Pixie, Inissia, and CitiZ models, press down the 2 flashing buttons and hold them for approximately 3 seconds.
    • For the Prodigio model, press the 3 coffee buttons at the same time and hold them for 6 seconds to enter descaling mode.

Place a large mug or container under the machine’s spout, and press any of the blinking coffee buttons to start descaling. As the cycle runs, the solution will move through your Nespresso machine to remove any limescale or calcium buildup inside and empty into the mug.[8]
    • When the solution finishes running through your machine, you may hear it beeping or the buttons will start blinking again.
    • Descaling usually takes around 10–20 minutes.
    • Chiu says that on some models you may need to "press and hold the button to pour out the water tank."[9]

To clean your Nespresso machine, first unplug it so it’s off. Then, remove the water tank and lid and wash them with unscented detergent. Rinse with warm water and dry with a clean towel or cloth. Wipe down the coffee outlet and inside the machine with a damp cloth. You should also empty the drip tray and capsule container on your machine every day. Reassemble your machine when you’re finished. It's also recommended that you descale your Nespresso machine at least once per year to remove calcium buildup. To descale your machine, first remove the drip tray and any empty capsules. Then, fill the water tank with 1 unit of Nespresso descaling solution and some fresh water until you reach the line marked near the top of the tank. Place a container that holds at least 1 liter (¼ gallon) beneath the coffee outlet and turn on the machine. Hold both the espresso and Lungo buttons for 5 seconds to start the descaling mode. Then, press the Lungo button and wait for your machine to brew all of the descaling solution into the container. Pour the brewed solution back into the water tank and repeat the process. Fill the water tank with fresh water and press the Lungo button to start the rinse cycle. Finally, once all of the fresh water has been brewed, hold both the espresso and Lungo buttons for 5 seconds to exit the descaling and rinsing mode.
