How to Clean a Stroller – Tips and Tricks!

You will likely find random stains like chocolate or pen making their way onto your travel system. But how do you get your stroller clean?

Here’s our top tips for getting your baby stroller looking shiny and new again, using only household items to make your job a little easier.

Guide to Cleaning your Baby Stroller

Fabric Lining

What you need:

Vacuum cleaner

Bowl of lukewarm water

Baby-friendly soap

Microfibre cloth

Baby wipes

How to clean:

Good-quality baby strollers will have premium lining which should last a long time. But those inevitable spills like reflux, juice, crumbs and general messes still need cleaning up! You’ll also face tougher stains like nappy rash cream and sunscreen, which can be absorbed by the fabric.

No matter how careful you are, the seat pad of your stroller will usually wind up getting dirty somehow. The problem is putting it in the washing machine is usually not advised. Some travel systems – where your stroller can transform into a car seat or bassinet – also might not have a removeable seat pad at all. So, what can you do?

Firstly, use a vacuum cleaner to clean up any loose crumbs. Make sure to get right in all those nooks and crannies!

Then, mix a small amount of baby-friendly soap in your bowl of lukewarm water. Dip the microfibre cloth into the soapy mix and spot clean away any stains. Rub gently at the marks (don’t scrub too hard). Then, rinse your cloth and get a new bowl of fresh water. Dab away any soap suds – there shouldn’t be too many, as you only need a little bit of soap in the first mix.

Finally, give the fabric a final clean and wipe the rest with a baby wipe – this helps make the lining smell much fresher, too.

Chassis

What you need:

Bowl of warm water

Washing up liquid

Sponge scourer

Baby wipes

How to clean:

From rainy afternoon strolls to snowy winter walks, baby strollers will certainly end up battling the elements! The chassis or frame will probably end up looking a bit grubby after the winter months, but luckily, it’s the easiest part of your stroller to clean.

Mix a small amount of washing up liquid with warm water, then dip your sponge scourer in the mix. Use the soft side of the sponge to wipe all over the chassis, cleaning away any old rain water or dirty residue. You can use the rougher side of the scourer if there are any stubborn stains. Make sure to really get the sponge right into the nooks and crannies of the stroller chassis. Finally, once the muddy marks have disappeared, wipe over one more time with a baby wipe.

Wheels

What you need:

Bowl of warm water

Washing up liquid

Scrubbing brush

How to clean:

As they’re frequently touching the ground, your baby stroller wheels are probably going to get the muckiest of all!

You shouldn’t worry too much about keeping your stroller wheels in tip top condition, because they’ll get dirty every time you go out. But you should check them occasionally, because when they’re too muddy, it can be hard to keep your stroller under control. Plus, the wheels can get embedded with small stones or glass, so it’s worth keeping an eye out for those too.

To clean your stroller wheels, dip your brush into a mix of warm water and washing up liquid. Scrub the wheels firmly, rubbing away the build-up of dirt. If you have really stubborn marks, pour hot water on them first.

Then, leave the wheels to air dry. Make sure to give them a quick spin when they’re dry to check they’re still working as normal.

Handlebar

What you need:

Bowl of warm water

Baby-friendly soap

Microfibre cloth

Baby wipes

You might not think your baby stroller’s handlebar will get dirty, but as you’re constantly holding onto it, you could pass on some germs. Older babies who can sit up can also reach out and grab onto the handlebar, which can make a mess after their mid-morning banana!

Simply dip your microfibre cloth into a mix of warm water and baby-friendly soap, then wipe the handlebar. Give it a final scrub with a baby wipe to keep it totally germ free.

Shopping Basket

What you need:

Vacuum cleaner

How to clean:

Luckily, your shopping basket is the easiest part of your stroller to clean. Unless you have a juice explosion, or perhaps a yogurt burst in your bag, the basket should stay pretty tidy. Simply vacuum up any loose debris or use a baby wipe for a quick clean every now and then!

Hood

What you need:

Washing up liquid

How to clean:

Unfortunately, your stroller hood is another part which will battle the elements! Important for protecting your baby from wind, rain and snow, your hood and its cover will get quite grubby in winter weather.

You could use a special upholstery cleaner, but these are usually expensive and not something you’d find lying around the house. So, like cleaning your baby stroller’s wheels, you’ll need a scrubbing brush, plus a mix of warm water and washing up liquid. Only use a tiny drop of washing up liquid to avoid staining the stroller hood. Plus, avoid soaking the fabric too heavily, as it can take quite a long time to dry. Gently rub with your scrubbing brush until the marks fade away.
