How To Clean Carpet On Stairs
Maybe your like
Carpeting on stairs is great for creating warmth and dampening noise but it experiences a lot of foot traffic that can lead to a build-up of dirt.
Carpet on stairs can be trickier to clean than carpeting on a flat surface. Use our guide to ensure your stair carpets don’t become too grubby.
1. Brushing and sweeping
Regularly brush and sweep your carpeted stairs to remove loose dirt. It will fluff up the fibres, so they don’t get flattened near the middle of the steps due to foot traffic. Avoid very stiff bristles and over-brushing in case you damage the fibres.
2. Vacuuming
Vacuum your carpeted stairs regularly. Vacuuming removes dirt deep in the fibres, such as pet hair. Use small hose attachments to get into the corners of the steps. Regular vacuuming will help prevent flattened fibres.
3. Spot cleaning
Deal with marks and spills immediately if possible. Remove excess dirt with paper towels and blot the mark using a mild detergent solution. Avoid bleach or harsh detergents. Rinse out the detergent with fresh water but don’t saturate the fibres. Allow to airdry before vacuuming.
4. Odour reduction
If you have pets and you’re worried about your carpeted stairs becoming smelly, there are odour removal sprays and powders available. Choose an eco-friendly product and use it sparingly. Odour removers can build up in carpets if overused.
5. Steam cleaning
For an overall deep clean, hire a steam-cleaning machine if you don’t have one. Bear in mind that steam cleaning is hard work and won’t help your carpets if done incorrectly. Deep cleaning for carpets on stairs is recommended about once a year.
6. Preventing dirt build up on stairs
To prevent dirty marks on carpeted stairs, have a no-shoes rule. It may be necessary to stop animals going upstairs, especially outdoor dogs. Keep on top of regular sweeping and vacuuming to stop dirt building up in the carpet fibres.
