In this quick guide we show you how to clean bricks in a fireplace. Firstly, once completely cold, remove any heat source that was previously used. Then use a vacuum with a soft brush attachment to remove the loose dust, debris, and soot. For light stain removal, on any age of bricks, combine half a cup of washing up liquid with four cups of water in a spray bottle and shake. Spray the solution on to the bricks and then use scrubbing brushes in circular motions to remove the grime. Rinse the bricks with warm, clean water and then dry them with a clean cloth. If the stains are a little more stubborn, try using Borax. Mix two tablespoons of Borax with four cups of hot water and 1 tablespoon of washing up liquid in your spray bottle. Then follow the same cleaning process as above. If you’d prefer to make a paste that can be brushed on instead of sprayed, try adding two to three tablespoons of washing up liquid to half a cup of baking soda. Once applied to the brick you’ll need to leave the solution on for around five minutes and then rinse it off with warm water. White vinegar can also be used as a cleaning agent, however acidic cleaners shouldn’t be used on bricks older than 20 years as it can be too abrasive on older bricks. To use vinegar, mix equal parts with water in a spray bottle.
