Workout mats and gym floors can be ground zero for sweaty dirt and germs, including the viruses that cause cold and flu. Here’s how to keep yours clean and sanitized.

Viruses can spread indirectly via surfaces,1 so it’s important to keep shared gym surfaces like floors and mats sanitized. Whether you run a public gym or just want to maintain a healthy exercise space at home, these simple steps can help keep your workout sessions feeling clean and fresh.

Rubber gym mats can get dirty and sweaty. Check out our easy-to-follow instructions and learn how keep yours in tip-top shape.

  1. Measure 1/3 cup Clorox™ Disinfecting Bleach, and add it to 1 gallon cool water in a plastic dishpan.

  2. To test colorfastness, apply a drop of bleach solution to one corner of the mat. After 1 minute, rinse and blot dry. No color change means it can be safely bleached.

  3. Use a sponge to apply the bleach and water solution to the mat.

    Tip

    Reapply as needed to keep the surface wet for 6 minutes.

  4. Rinse thoroughly with clean water.

  5. Let surfaces air dry.

Make sanitizing a regular part of your fitness routine, and clean your gym floors with Clorox™ Disinfecting Wet Mopping Cloths or Clorox™ Scentiva™ Disinfecting Wet Mopping Cloths. Be sure to remove dust, pet hair and loose debris before mopping:

  1. Attach the wet mopping cloth to a compatible mopping tool.
  2. Mop the floor, using enough cloths so the floor stays visibly wet.
  3. To disinfect, make sure floors remain wet for 4 minutes.
