How to Clean Spills on a Concrete Floor

Concrete is an especially durable product, but spills on a concrete floor may cause stains. To prevent damage, be sure to clean spills properly. Keep in mind that you may need to use various cleaning methods and materials to eliminate different substances from your concrete floor.

Cleaning Grease and Gasoline Spills

Use a powdered dishwasher detergent to remove grease and gasoline from concrete. Cover the spill with the detergent, and let it sit for approximately 10 minutes. Once the cleaning substance has had a chance to soak into the stain, use a stiff broom to scrub the detergent into the floor. During this process, the cleaning product will break up the grease while soaking it out of the concrete. Leftover dryer lint can also be used to soak up oil and grease.

How to Clean Antifreeze Spills

Be sure to clean up antifreeze spills immediately because the substance is dangerous to animals and children. If antifreeze has dried into the concrete, you’ll need to rehydrate it with a little bit of water. The next cleaning step is to sprinkle a powdery laundry detergent over the spill. Cover the stain with several sheets of newspaper, and sprinkle water over it. Let the concoction sit for about three hours. Once the time has passed, scrub the area with a nylon brush. Then, rinse the area with clean water, and allow it to dry.

Maintaining Concrete Floors

To increase the longevity of your concrete floors and prevent long-term damage, sweep and clean them regularly. After you’ve swept away the dirt and debris, scrub your concrete floors with a cleaning solution that includes 1 cup of detergent and 2 gallons of hot water.
