How To Connect A Non Domain Server Or Workstation To Your WSUS ...

I am tasked to connect non domain machines to our WSUS server.I have researched online and found tips to change registry or export registry from working domain computers to non domain computers but I think it didn’t work out for me, I found another way to do it and it worked every time.

Checking to see if Windows Update is turned on1. Go to Control Panel and click on Windows Update2. Click on Change settings on the left menu3. Under Important updates, select Download updates but let me choose whether to install them and click on OK4. Leave this window open

Group Policy1. Open Gpedit.msc2. Expand Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates>Windows Components>Windows Update3. On the right side panel, double click on Allow signed updates from an internet Microsoft Update service location4. Click on Enable and click on OK5. Double click on Specify intranet Microsoft update service location, enter your WSUS server FQDN and port number (if any)

Windows Update1. Switch back to Windows Update2. Click on Check for updates on the left hand menu3. Note, you should see this, Managed by your system administratorImage

Verifying that your non domain server or workstation is connected to the WSUS, check the C:\Windows\WindowsUpdates.log. Scroll down till you see the FQDN of the WSUS server.

WSUS server1. Open Windows Server Updates Services2. Expand to Computers>All Computers>Unassigned Computers3. You should see your non domain server or workstation there. Note that it is different from the rest, it only shows the NETBIOS name but without the FQDN.

Hope this helps 🙂
