Jump to Recipe Print RecipeI love making just about anything in my slow cooker, and making rice in the slow cooker is SUPER simple! It takes just a couple of minutes of time and you can have lovely, soft, fluffy rice with next to no effort.
Meal planning with mince is a great way to save money on groceries and rice goes with just about all mince based dishes. Meal planning always helps me with my money saving challenges as groceries are one area you can cut back and save quite a few pounds every week!
Cooking rice in the slow cooker can be great if you’re looking to make up meals for the freezer. While you’re cooking your chicken or other ingredients the rice will be cooking itself and then they can be chilled safely and frozen in individual portions.
I am typically using a Ninja Foodi slow cooker these days, the OL750UK multi-cooker model, but I have also made this recipe in a 4 quart and 6.5 quart slow cooker too. Any type of crock pot should work great for this recipe. If you don’t have a rice cooker this is a great way to still make a large batch of rice with minimal effort.
What I love about using the slow cooker, versus cooking on the hob, is I can just set it up to start the cooking time and then I don’t have to worry about the pan boiling over. I’ve used all different types of rice including long grain rice, jasmine rice and brown rice too.
Knowing how to cook rice in the slow cooker will save you effort and means you can use a triple slow cooker effectively, or even just divide your normal slow cooker into two sections! Scroll down near the end for a recipe card that shows you how to make rice in the slow cooker.

Ingredients for cooking rice in the slow cooker
(Serves 2-3 people)
1 cup rice (I used long grain rice)
2 cups water or chicken broth if you want chicken rice (chicken flavoured anyway!)
Generous pinch of salt
Spray oil
How to cook rice in a slow cooker – my simple method
Spray oil or rub butter around the inside of your slow cooker pot.
Rinse the rice thoroughly. Very thoroughly!
Pour the rice, your water and salt into the slow cooker pot.
Slow cook on high for 1 1/2 – 2 hours. Stir every 20-30 minutes if possible to prevent sticking.
Serve! You may want to scatter some fresh herbs over the rice too, if you’re so inclined.
My thoughts on cooking rice in the slow cooker:
This is SO simple. I don’t have to be there constantly watching it, like I do with the stove top hob. As witching hour is quite busy in our home this is a great way to prepare dinner, without having to be available too much.
It takes just a few seconds to stir the rice, and helps me serve a tasty, warming frugal dinner. I also like knowing that if I accidentally leave this for 5-10 more minutes it isn’t going to become stuck to the bottom of the pan, or turn into a charred mess, like it would if I cooked it on the hob.
I do find that sometimes this rice needs a little bit of fork separation, perhaps if I’ve not serve it as much as I should have, or haven’t rinsed it thoroughly before using it.
I have found that sometimes there is a little bit of rice stuck to the bottom of the slow cooker. To remove this I add hot water to the pot and allow it to cook while I eat dinner. Then clean up is really easy. If you want to avoid this you could try a slow cooker liner. I don’t mind spending a few seconds scrubbing to avoid using another piece of plastic in my home.

Best rice to use for white rice in the slow cooker?
I love to use long grain rice, or basmati rice, as I feel that these work the best. You can change the rice out and the timings and method will work the same really. Jasmine rice is always a winner in our home and we love it with a slow cooker chicken tikka masala.
When using long grain rice I would consider switching the water for chicken stock or beef broth, to bring some extra flavour to the rice. Vegetable bouillon or a vegetable stock cube will work great too.
If I know I am going to be serving my rice with a flavour packed meal, such as my Ninja Foodi beef chilli, I don’t worry too much about the type of rice and just use whatever is cheapest.
Just about any rice, apart from instant rice, would work great for this recipe and the methods in this post.
Looking for some different slow cooker rice recipes?
Why not try my slow cooker chicken and shrimp paella! It’s a real winner and a delicious one pot slow cooker dinner that the whole family will love.
This cooked rice can be used for a variety of great recipes too including chicken fried rice and as a side dish to tasty meals such as slow cooker beef stroganoff and air fryer chicken fajitas.
Want to double this recipe?
When I want to double this recipe I do just that. Double the rice, double the liquid. I leave the salt the same, and don’t double that.
Also I love to whip up a batch of different air fryer side dishes, like air fryer prawn toast, and then I’ll freeze with small portions of this rice for mini meals during the week that are full of flavour and tasty too.
Can you cook rice in a slow cooker?

ALL of the slow cooker recipes on this website have been cooked using a Ninja Foodi OL750UK, or a previous Ninja multi-cooker model, but you can use ANY slow cooker, as timings should be very similar.
