Maybe your like
Ready to crochet your very first hat? This Basic Beanie Crochet Pattern is perfect for beginners! In the video tutorial below, How to Crochet a Basic Beanie for Beginners, I will show you how to start a beanie with a magic circle, how to crochet in the round, and how to measure a beanie for different sizes. With simple stitches and a classic shape, it’s an easy and satisfying project to get you started. The pattern includes sizes from preemie all the way to large adult, so you can make a cozy beanie for everyone in the family. A detailed size chart helps you pick the perfect fit, and there’s a full video tutorial to guide you every step of the way—even if you’re brand new to crochet. Let’s make your first beanie together!

Choosing Your Yarn
When choosing yarn for your first beanie, acrylic is a great option—it’s affordable, easy to work with, and widely available. For beginners, I recommend starting with a smooth, medium weight (worsted weight) acrylic yarn that holds its shape well and doesn’t split easily. Some of my favorite beginner-friendly choices are I Love This Yarn from Hobby Lobby, which is soft and easy to crochet with, Loops & Threads Impeccable for its great stitch definition and availability at Michaels, and Red Heart Super Saver, a durable classic that comes in tons of colors. These yarns are reliable, washable, and perfect for practicing your stitches while making something you’ll actually want to wear!

Making Your Beanie
A basic crochet beanie made with all double crochet stitches is one of the easiest and fastest projects for beginners. It’s worked in the round, starting at the top of the hat and gradually increasing to create a flat circle for the crown. Once the crown is the right width for your size, you’ll stop increasing and simply continue working in double crochet stitches to build the sides of the hat. This creates a stretchy, comfortable fit with a simple, clean look. Since double crochet is taller than other basic stitches, the beanie works up quickly and gives you plenty of practice with consistent stitch placement and tension—perfect for learning the basics while making something useful!
