There are essential kitchen skills that everyone needs to know when learning how to cook. Learning how to cube potatoes is at the top of the list.

It is not complicated at all, but I use this skill every single week. Let's dive in on how to easily dice potatoes.

Equipment needed

sharp chef's knife: a sharp chef's knife is essential in every kitchen when chopping vegetables. I have a Cutco knife and love it! I use it multiple times a day. You will save yourself a world of frustration in the kitchen if you start with a sharp knife that glides easily through food.

sturdy cutting board: You want to make sure your cutting surface does not move around on your but remains stable. I prefer a nice solid wood chopping board.

potato: This works with any type of raw potatoes: russet, Yukon gold, red potatoes, or sweet potatoes. I prefer to use peeled potatoes, so first wash potatoes and peel outsides of the potatoes with a vegetable peeler before chopping.

Step by step tutorial

If you prefer static pictures to learn the process, I've got you covered as well.

1. Using a sharp knife, cut your potato in lengthwise slices into your desired thickness. If you want small cubes, makes your slices small. If you want large cubes, make your slices larger. For this demonstration, I am slicing into quarter inch slices because I want my potato pieces to be a quarter inch on each side. Whether you want a smaller dice or chunkier dice, it begins with your decision right here. Try to make your cuts as even as possible.

2. Place your slices cut side down and slice again lengthwise into the same width.

3. Holding your slices in tact with your free hand, rotate the potato a quarter turn and make the final cuts, again of the same width, in the opposite direction of your previous cuts. You will be left with uniform pieces of cubed potatoes.
