Most annuals and many perennial flowers will continue to bloom throughout the season if they are deadheaded.

Where and when should you cut away faded geraniums? Geraniums are easy to care for making them perfect for low maintenance gardens.

They do not need to be pruned but they should be deadheaded regularly.

Wilted flowers will needlessly drain the plant of its energy and this will prevent the plant from growing further flowers.

You have a couple of options when it comes to deadheading geraniums, one of the simplest is to “pinch out geraniums”, this just means that you pinch off faded blooms, or you can cut away the old flowers to remove them.

It is important when deadheading geraniums to not simply pull off the top flowers but, to actually snap the stem just below the joint at the same point where new growth starts.

Deadheading should be done throughout your plant’s blooming season.

When you notice any of the blooms starting to fade remove them when they start to appear.

This should usually be done every few weeks, it only takes a few minutes to do and is essential to ensure new growth so this simple task should not be neglected.

If you use scissors or secateurs to deadhead your geraniums make sure you sanitise them properly, this might sound like a faff but failing to do so will increase the risk of disease.

If the leaves on your geraniums start to turn yellow don’t be concerned, this is very common.

You should cut off these leaves as they appear to ensure your plant continues to thrive.

But, make sure you aren’t overwatering your geraniums, yellow leaves may not be a sign of age, sometimes these leaves turn yellow due to overwatering.

If this occurs wait until the soil dries up before you start to water them again.
