How to Close a Robinhood Account

You’ve decided to close your Robinhood account. To avoid problems, review this guide:

Robinhood has three account types: crypto, securities, and cash. Closing any of them follows the steps below, with a few differences noted. Robinhood’s securities account can be either an individual/joint brokerage account or an IRA. Both close the same way, but tax rules differ. For example, selling in a taxable account or withdrawing from an IRA may produce a Form 1099 next April. Talk to a tax advisor first.

Two Methods to Close a Robinhood Account

You can close a Robinhood account in two main ways. First, sell any securities and crypto, withdraw the cash, and then request account deactivation. Second, for securities accounts only, do a full ACATS transfer out, which closes the account automatically.

Delete Robinhood Account: Method 1

To use the first method, follow these steps: First: If you have a Gold membership, cancel it. On the website, go to the Account menu in the top-right, select Gold, and unsubscribe. On the mobile app, tap the profile icon in the bottom-right, choose Gold, and cancel. Second: Sell all positions in the account, unless it’s a cash account. You can also move securities or crypto instead of selling, using the steps in Method 2 below. To transfer crypto out of Robinhood, go to the coin’s profile and select “Send & Receive.” Complete the security setup and follow the prompts. Third: Withdraw any remaining cash. Link a bank account under Transfers in the Account menu, then request a full ACH transfer. Fourth: After the balance is zero, close the account. On the website, go to Account > Settings and click the red Deactivate link. On the mobile app, tap the profile icon, open the menu, select Settings, and tap Deactivate. Cancel Robinhood Account On the deactivation page, disable stock lending and cash sweep, if needed, before submitting your request. Close Robinhood Account If you close a spending account, its debit card will be deactivated and rewards will end.

Delete Robinhood Account: Method 2

The second method is to transfer your brokerage account out via ACATS. This moves all assets to another broker and automatically closes your Robinhood account. Only securities accounts can use ACATS. Crypto and spending accounts must use Method 1. Both taxable and IRA accounts can transfer securities and cash. You usually don’t need to sell anything before an ACATS transfer, except for option contracts expiring soon. Those you should sell or let expire. To start an ACATS transfer, contact the receiving broker—it sends the transfer request, not Robinhood. It must be a full transfer; partial transfers won’t close the account.
