How To Detangle a Synthetic Wig Share Share Link Close share Copy link

“Oh my goodness!!” …. “What should I do?”… These are just some of the reactions to a bad hair day. Every morning we all get up, get ready and hope for a good hair day but this isn’t always the case. Having a bad hair morning can be detrimental, especially if you have a synthetic wig or hair piece. With synthetic hair a bad hair day is like an uninvited guest. Realistically, a synthetic piece is ready to wear; however, synthetic pieces can tangle and frizz as well. To think tangles will never happen with your synthetic product would be naive. Lucky for you we are here to help when those tangles rear their ugly heads.

Before we can get into the process of detangling your synthetic piece, you need to understand the synthetic fiber. Synthetic hair is designed to be a ready to wear fiber and it is considered to be a “memory” fiber.  Memory fibers hold the style of the product and offer little to no versatility. Heat friendly synthetic fibers are the only synthetic fibers that can be altered. Keep in mind the estimated life span of a synthetic hair product is approximately 4-6 months. With proper care your hair can last longer.

Now that we have touched on the fundamentals of the synthetic fiber, we can finally walk you step by step through caring and detangling your synthetic hair.  For starters, you will need the proper hair care products.  On www.wigs.com , we offer all the required synthetic hair care products. The standard required products are:

1.) Wide Tooth Comb

2.) BeautiMark Renew Shampoo

3.) BeautiMark Leave-In Conditioner

Keep in mind you can only use synthetic care products on synthetic hair.

Synthetic Wig Products

All synthetic products should be washed every 6-8 wears to avoid tangling and product build up. When washing your synthetic hair, DO NOT SOAK THE HAIR. You always want to wash you hair under a running faucet with room temperature water.

  • To begin apply a gracious amount of BeautiMark Shampoo to your synthetic hair and rinse it out. You will follow up, by using the BeautiMark Leave-In Conditioner, remembering not to get the conditioner on the roots. Applying conditioner on the roots or knots will loosen the hairs. While the BeautiMark Conditioner is coating the hair, you want to use your wide tooth comb and begin detangling. Detangle the hair starting from the bottom of the hair and working your way to the roots. Once detangled you may now rinse the hair.
  • Follow up by pat drying the synthetic hair and place it on your wig stand to air dry. While the hair is on the wig stand take the opportunity to detangle and style it with your wide tooth comb once more.

If you would prefer to watch these steps, our “How to Wash a Wig Video like an Expert” is the perfect video for you:

We also recommend using the BeautiMark Smooth Detangler for your synthetic hair; you can spray this detangler daily to control frizz and aide with knotting.

Wig Detangler

If these steps do not work or if you need further assistance feel free to contact one of our experts. We are happy to assist you in getting rid of any knots or frizz that could cause a bad hair day!

Once you’re done detangling your wig, remember to store it properly on a wig stand or in a ResQ Bag Mini by Amy Gibson to maintain its style.

Thank you this really did help I’m a hairdresser but this is the first time I’ve worked with synthetic hair pieces it’s a clip-on hairpiece it’s very Tangled it’s curly and I just needed to know the way, take us out first when it’s dry or now what you said I think I’ll do because that seems to make more sense 2 Komatsu Tangles when conditioner is in the hair I wouldn’t want to do that on real hair pieces that are real hair because there are stretches when wet and just Tangled you moved the conditioner on it was still stretching break so thank you
