This wikiHow teaches you how to make the Google search page and the screen on your Chromebook rotate on the screen like a barrel rolling down a hill. This feature, called a barrel roll, is one of many ″Easter eggs,″ or secret silly features, on the Google website.
Ways to Do a Barrel Roll on Google
All you need to do is type "do a barrel roll" in the Google search bar and press Enter or Return. You can also search "z or r twice" instead. If the Google site won't do a barrel roll, you can do it at https://elgoog.im/doabarrelroll.
Steps
Section 1 of 2:Doing a Barrel Roll in a Browser
-
1 Type https://www.google.com into a web browser on your computer. You’ll need to use Chrome, Safari, Microsoft Edge, or Firefox on a computer to see the barrel roll. -
2 Type do a barrel roll into the search bar. It’s at the top of the page. Advertisement -
3 Press ↵ Enter or ⏎ Return. The Google website will now rotate inside your browser. - If you don’t see the barrel roll, you may have disabled animations in your browser settings. You may also be using a browser add-on/extension that prevents CSS animations from loading.[1] Temporarily disabling add-ons that change the way websites appear (such as Stylish, Stylus, or various extensions that aim to speed up your browser) may solve the issue.[2]
- You can also do a barrel roll by typing the text Z or R twice into the search bar and pressing ↵ Enter or ⏎ Return.
- Another way to do a barrel roll is to point your browser directly to https://elgoog.im/doabarrelroll. The page may take a few seconds to load and rotate.
- For another Easter egg that makes the search page look different, try searching for askew. This tilts the page so it looks slightly off-center.

Press Ctrl+Alt+⇧ Shift+Rotate. The rotate key is located above the number keys and has an image of a rotating arrow. It should be above the 4 key (but may vary depending on your Chromebook model).[3] - Once you press these keys, the currently open screen will rotate.
