How to Draw a Great Looking 3D Sphere for Kids and Beginners - Step 1

1. Begin by drawing three straight lines. The longest is horizontal, with diagonal lines extending downward from each end.

The lines should partially outline a trapezoid shape. This begins the base or stand that supports the sphere.

2. Draw a large circle overlapping the trapezoid shape, erasing as necessary. This circle will become the sphere itself.

3. Begin applying the contours that will trick the eye into seeing the circle as a three-dimensional shape. Draw a small oval near the top of the circle, at its pole.

4. Draw a latitudinal curved line near the top of the circle, below the oval. This line also appears to enclose a partial oval shape.

5. Draw another long curved line across the circle.

6. Draw another long curved line across the front of the circle.

7. Draw a final horizontal curved line near the bottom of the circle. Draw two short curved lines from the sides of the circle to the interior of the small oval.

8. Next, begin drawing longitudinal curved lines. These span from the bottom of the circle to the top and meet the short curved lines drawn in the previous step.

9. Draw two more vertical curved lines across the circle.

Color Your 3D Sphere Drawing

Shade your cartoon sphere. Notice how the shading in our illustration further enhances the three-dimensional effect.

The color is lightest at a point near the top of the circle and grows darker in circular rings. This gives the effect of a point of light shining on the round object.

This 3D sphere drawing tutorial uses ovals and curved lines to trick the mind into thinking that the flat circle is in fact round.
