The human body always has a belly button on the stomach, whether your drawing is a man, woman or child. Even animals drawn in a cartoon format might show a belly button, depending on your style or the character you are drawing. Sketching the belly button on any drawing requires looking at the position of the body, locating it on the stomach and then drawing.

Step 1

Look over the drawing you are working on and determine the appropriate area for the belly button. If you have not yet drawn a body or body outline, you should draw it down to the bottom of the stomach before working on the belly button to prevent inappropriate belly button placement. The belly button on the human body is typically around 1/4 to 1/3 up from the bottom of the stomach area and centered on the body. If the body is turned to the right side on the drawing, the belly button is off-center toward the left side. If the body is turned to the left side on the drawing, place the belly button off-center to the right side.

Step 2

Draw a small circle for the belly button. On the bottom curve of the circle, darken the line so the bottom half of the circle is about twice as thick as the top. Shade lightly a little below the line to give the effect that it is protruding outward.

Step 3

Draw the shape of a six with a larger circle than normal and a shorter top line. Shade the inside of the circle to give the effect of depth for a belly button that recedes inward.
