How to Draw a Great Looking Centaur for Kids and Beginners - Step 1

1. Begin by drawing an oval and an upside-down pentagon. These shapes will help you to sketch the head and chest of the centaur.

2. Contour the head and body of the centaur. Use curved lines that meet at gentle points to sketch the hair extending from the head. Don’t forget the wavy hair crossing the forehead. Use curved lines to enclose the ears. Extend curved lines below the head to form the neck and shoulders. Use additional curved lines to contour the sides of the torso and to form the soft jagged points where the human torso meets the furry rump.

3. Erase guide lines from the face and torso. Detail the hair with curved lines that extend from the central part to the edges. Use a series of overlapping curved lines to draw the muscular arms and clenched fists. Band the wrist with two curved lines, outlining a bracelet or gauntlet.

4. Draw a horizontal oval overlapping the bottom of the torso. This will help you to sketch the horse-like posterior of the centaur.

5. Use curved lines at the sides, top, and bottom of the oval to contour the back, belly, rump, and chest of the horse body. Extend a curved line from the rump and double it back upon itself to form the tail. Draw long, curved lines down the length of the tail.

6. Draw guide lines to help you form realistic horse legs. For each leg, draw an oval overlapping the body. From it, draw a straight line. Then, draw another straight line, forming a bend in the leg.

7. Use curved lines to sketch in the legs, and erase the guide lines. Notice how the ovals and circles lend themselves to the rounded bulges of the upper leg, the knees, and the feet. Use a curved line to enclose the hoof at the bottom of each foot.

8. Draw a spear in the centaur's hand. Extend parallel straight lines above and below the clenched fist. Connect them at the ends, and draw a line across the top of the shaft. This outlines the base of the spear. At the top of the shaft, draw a pentagon to form the spear.

9. Detail the centaur's face and body. Use curved lines to contour the eyebrows, nose, mouth, and chest. Use irregular rounded shapes for the bellybutton and the eyes.

The centaur is a legendary creature of Greek mythology. The centaur was purportedly part horse and part man.

Many were said to dwell in the mountains of Arcadia and Thessaly. Centaurs were depicted as drawing the chariot of Dionysus, the god of wine, or being ridden by Eros, the god of love.

Chiron was one of the most famous centaurs in Greek myth. Unlike his wild, violent brothers, Chiron studied medicine and was known for his wisdom.

According to legend, he gave up his immortality to save Prometheus and then became the constellation known as Centaurus.

The centaur is sometimes confused with Satyr or Faunus, each having the upper body of a man and the lower body of a goat. These creatures were associated with the gods Dionysus and Pan. The minotaur similarly had a man's body and a bull's head.
