Marigolds are small golden yellow flowers. There are other colors like shades of orange and red. The colors on a Marigold can be 1 color or 2 colors swirled together. They grow between 6 inches to 4 feet tall. The petals on the flower grow in layers, and the petals get smaller the closer to the center of the bloom. Marigolds like warm weather. They naturally grow in Central America and the American Southwest. They are really herbs, but they aren’t used in cooking a lot. At least not in America, but it’s added to food for coloring in Europe. As a perfume flower, the Marigold stinks. But some insects and spiders like to eat them.
Did you know?
- Chicken farmers feed chickens marigolds to make the yolk of their eggs more yellow.

Activity: Plant potted marigolds to use for flower garlands for party decorations. When you have enough to make long stings of flower heads, then string them onto a thread with a sewing needle. There are many other garden flowers that can give a flower garland variety.
