Step 1: Let's draw a squid! Start with a very long oval shape, making sure to trace a square shape at the end for the head.

Step 2: Draw the first fin at the side of the oval. Trace a line going along the side of the oval, making sure to add a hump at the top of the fin.

Step 3: Draw the second fin on the other side of the squid's body. Trace it like you did the first fin!

Step 4: At the front of the body where you drew the square shape for the head, draw in two dots to either side of the square for eyes.

Step 5: At the end of the head, draw in the short tentacles by tracing five skinny, squiggly lines. Here's a tip: they don't all have to be the same size and they don't all have to be going in the same direction!

Step 6: Last, trace two longer tentacles, and these ones are more straight and going in the same direction. Here's a tip: make the lines at the end of the two tentacles pointy! There's your squid! Did you know that squids can grow to be as long as 40 feet and weigh as much as 1,000 pounds?

Squid are invertebrates, and that means that they do not have backbones. There are about 300 species of squid, and they live for about one year.

• The vampire squid has red eyes and a black body.
• Squid have eight arms and two tentacles, and their shell is inside their body.
• Squid spray an inky substance called sepia to ward off predators.
