Drawing Dinosaurs

Almost every kid in the world goes through a dinosaur phase, when he or she eats, sleeps, and breathes dinosaurs. Sometimes this happens as young as age two or three, but usually it occurs around six or seven, when they are just starting to learn more about the world around them, and the history that it holds.The good news is that kids at this age are like sponges, and love to absorb all the info they can about these creatures that lived so long ago. In fact, a recent study showed that being obsessed with dinosaurs can actually enhance kids’ intelligence. That’s great news when it comes to choosing books, videos and toys about them, but what about when it comes to drawing a dinosaur? A few ovals and rectangles might work for kindergarteners, but what if they are hoping to draw something with a little more detail?This new easy tutorial is designed to help students at that crossroad, and will walk them through drawing a long neck type of dinosaur, complete with plates along the back, and solid and sturdy looking legs below. It’s got a bit of a classic dino shape, without any of the more complicated dinosaur parts and poses.

Why draw with Guides?

You may have noticed that all of the tutorials on this website have a dashed vertical line and horizontal line running through the center of each step. If students make their own centered lines on their own paper, before drawing, they will have an easy reference to follow. All they need to do is fold their sheet of paper in half both ways, make a crease, and unfold. The best part is, by the time the drawing is done and colored in, the creases will have disappeared!

Materials

• Drawing Paper. This is the good stuff you can buy in bulk for a good price.
• Pencils. I like how this brand always makes nice dark lines.
• Black Marker. A permanent marker will give you a dark black color.
• Crayons. The larger packs are nice for more color choices.
