Amazing Cat Ears!

The ear of a cat is pretty similar to the ear of other mammals and have the same three parts: the outer ear, middle ear, and inner ear. But there is one distinctive feature that differentiates them from the rest of the pack.

The feline’s ears can move independently of each other because they are controlled by two sets of muscles (the outer ear is controlled by six muscles; while the inner ear is controlled by 12).

This gives cats an advantage when it comes to detecting sound, since they can pinpoint where a sound is coming from with much more accuracy than humans.

Cat Ears Convey Feelings

Cats can express many of their emotions through their ears. Their ears come in a variety of shapes and sizes, which gives them the ability to communicate in different ways. If you spend some time looking at your cat’s ears, you will know what they are feeling! Here are some general signs…

1. The cat’s ear is standing up

If the cat’s ear is standing up, that means they are feeling confident or playful. Cats with upright ears tend to be more aggressive than cats with droopy ears, who are usually happier and more relaxed.

2. Ears straight back

When a cat has its ears straight back it means they are feeling angry or afraid. They may be hissing or growling when this happens too!

3. Ears flattened against head

When a cat’s ears are flat against their head, it is feeling threatened or defensive. Some cats will also flatten their ears when being petted.
