“Are they Japanese dragons? Those are real…?” – Me as a child. Perhaps embarrassingly, for the longest time, I thought a komodo dragon was from Japan. And descents from dragons…hey I was a kid. Actually, a Komodo dragon is a large land lizard from the country of Indonesia. They are the largest land lizards on Earth actually! They have a big powerful bite and are 100% venomous killing machines. Their saliva has venom that prevents the blood from clotting! Word of advice: don’t watch the komodo videos out there! It’s pretty graphic, especially for little ones. 🎨 Parents: The only tools you need to use these how-to-draw tutorials are: an eraser, a pencil, and a piece of paper. But – if you have them around – a sketching pencil makes for fainter and softer lines that help kids build fine motor accuracy. I also recommend going over the sketch pencil with a black outline marker when you’re done for a neater finish. Lastly, erase the pencil marks before adding color.

  Interesting Facts about Komodo Dragons

• The biggest lizard types are Komodo dragons. Komodo dragons were mistakenly discovered 100 years ago when a plane crashed on an island.
• The Komodo dragon can attain a length of up to 10 feet.
• They lived for up to 30 years and weighed up to 200 pounds.
• Komodos come in colors such as blue, black, green, and gray.
• They have long claws and a broad, muscular tail that can double as their fifth leg.
• They were expected by scientists to be originally from Australia.
• The Komodo lives on the islands of Indonesia: Komodo, Flores, Rinca and Gili Motang.
• In the abandoned dug-out nests, female dragons lay their eggs. They incubate the eggs for about nine months.
• The mouth of the Komodo dragons is stewed with 60 different bacterial strains that infect the animals after their bite. Sepsis sets in within hours and death typically result within a day, since the infection is considered extremely severe.
• In young, Komodo dragons can climb trees using their paws, it cannot be due to its overweight when they’re grown.
• They used to struggle for the formation and security of their region with other adult Komodos. It can also take up to 2 hours to fight.
• Komodo forked his tongue like a snake to track scents of prey. The prey that is 4 miles away can be found by Komodo using their sensitive tongues.
• Komodo can only hunt in the daytime because they’re nearly blind at night.
• They use burrows in the rainy season to escape heat loss since like all lizards, they are cold-blooded animals.
• From the moment they are born, baby lizards live on trees to defend themselves from adult dragons.
• The World Animal Foundation reports that there is 6,000 Komodos total in the world. 1,700 for Komodo, 1,300 for Rinca, 100 for Gili Motang, and around 2,000 for Flores.
• In one location, they will spend several hours waiting for a deer, boar, goat, or something edible and sizeable. They could eat 80% of their body weight at one time.
• If they are in trouble, Komodos will throw up some contents from their stomachs to lower their weight.
