Today we will show you how. It is very easy once you learn these techniques. So, are you ready to learn how to eat a tostada? Let’s get started!

A Tostada Eating Instruction
If you love Mexican food or World food recipes you are in the right place here at the Tortilla channel. Obviously, we share a lot of tortilla recipes but also Spanish tortillas, other tortilla flatbread-related recipes, tapas, and much more.
One of my favorite recipes is tostada recipes. On the Tortilla channel, you can find quite a range of recipes from tuna, vegan, and shrimp. These are super easy to make but also very difficult to eat without making a mess.
What Is A Tostada?
If you do not know what a tostada is let me explain. A tostada is made with flour tortillas or corn tortillas. Tostada is Spanish for toasted because the tortilla is either fried or deep-fried.
Just like with bread going stale that you use for French toast a stale tortilla is perfect to use in a tostada. Tostadas are eaten plain or with a lot of toppings like:
- Meat
- Beans
- Eggs
- Cheese
- Lettuce
- Cabbage
- Shrimp
- Guacamole
- Avocado
- Tuna
- Salsa
- Chicken
- Vegetables
- Seafood
- Refried beans
You can also eat it as a snack. I regularly make tostadas with small tortillas but you can easily make this with a bit larger flour tortillas.

What Can Be A Problem When Eating Tostadas?
As the tortilla base is fried or oven-baked these tortillas get very crispy and as a result, they are also very fragile. You do not want to have food all over the place which can easily happen if you do not know how to do it.
How To Eat A Tostada?
You could try eating a tostada with a knife and fork but with a crisp base, it is almost impossible as your tortilla will break and fall apart when you put a knife in it.
So let me present you with a technique that does work and is a combination of hands and fork.
- Step 1 – This technique works best with small-size tostadas. If you have a seriously piled-up tostada with lots of different toppings start with your fork and take a full scoop with it to eat.
- Step 2 – Create a small circle that will fit in your mouth. Take your fork again and cover this small circle with a bit of topping.
- Step 3 – Carefully lift the tostada between your two thumbs and remaining fingers. Use your pinky fingers for additional support in the middle to prevent it from breaking.
- Step 4 – Take a small bite at the center of the tortilla and topping. This will prevent the tostada from collapsing. I can’t guarantee that none of the toppings or the crispy tortilla will fall but that is ok.
- Step 5 – Let it fall on your plate and eat it when you put your tostada down and repeat these steps.
Outside In Technique
You can decide to take a bite from the right side of the tostada then take another bite from the left side of the tortilla and then from the middle
Center To Side Technique
You can also decide to start in the center and work your way out. Always take bites center to side and not center, center, and out. If you do the latter, it will increase the chance of you breaking the tostada.
Try both ways and see which one works best for you. Remember to keep supporting the tostada with your pinky fingers for as long as possible. Then switch to thumb and fingers. Until you are done.
Put down the tostada after bites so you can regrip the tortilla and allow yourself to eat up all the fallen toppings. You can leave the fork aside and eat the toppings using your teeth as the fork.
Especially if the tortilla is not piled up too high you can eat the whole tostada with your hands and teeth.

Pro Tips
First of all, enjoy the tostada even if it breaks or food is falling down. That is what your plate is for. Put the tostada down in between 2 or 3 bites. It gives you a chance to eat all your falling toppings and regrip. Just lift the tostada carefully.
Lifting and setting down the tostada increases the chances of breaking but then you can eat the broken pieces of tostada way easily.
Try the techniques mentioned above and see if you like the center to out or the outside in method the best. Make sure you have enough paper towel to clean your face.
Always try to make your own that way you control the number of toppings and how big or small you make the tostadas.
