🥬 Health benefits

Fresh grapefruit makes a great snack and is one of my favorite citrus fruits. It is full of natural sugars and soluble fiber. It's a great part of a healthy diet.

It has a low glycemic index so it won't raise your blood sugar or insulin levels too much.

This juicy fruit is full of antioxidants that fight off free radicals and can boost your immune system, especially because of its high vitamin c content. Grapefruit is low in calories yet high in nutrients.

Grapefruit has been linked to some great health benefits like weight loss and a reduced risk of heart disease.

It's full of fiber, minerals and important nutrients and vitamins.

Just a word of caution: certain prescription medications can cause side effects with grapefruit, especially certain statins and high blood pressure medications. So make sure to check that out.

🧂 Ingredient notes

Since grapefruit can be so tart and sour, the best way for people new to eating it, is to balance that out with some sweetness. We do that by adding the following ingredients to our fruit salad. This is my favorite way to eat grapefruit.

  • Grapefruit - Red grapefruit and pink grapefruits are the sweetest, but use whatever you can find.
  • Avocado - The fat in the avocado help to smooth out the tartness in the grapefruit.
  • Banana - Adds a natural sweetness to balance out the tartness.
  • Maple syrup - Adds a nice sweetness
  • Sunflower seeds - Adds a nice crunch to balance out all the soft fruit.

🔪 Cutting a grapefruit

There are various ways to cut a grapefruit. The way I suggest for the recipe below is to cut it lengthwise:

  1. Find the nub on top of the fruit, or where the grapefruit was picked off the tree. Cut it from the top of the grapefruit to the bottom, with a sharp knife, instead of in the middle of the fruit.
  2. After cutting it lengthwise, cut it in half, lengthwise a few more times, like you would an orange. You want to create about 4-6 grapefruit wedges.
  3. Peel it with your hands, like you would orange slices.
  4. Now cut the grapefruit up into smaller pieces and add it to the bowl. You can also cut away the grapefruit peels if you don't like chewing on that.

Another way to cut a grapefruit

  1. Take the whole grapefruit and cut it in half, through the middle instead of top to bottom.
  2. Sprinkle a little sugar or maple syrup on each half of a grapefruit
  3. You will see the grapefruit has individual triangle sections. Use a grapefruit spoon to scoop out each section
  4. If you don't have a grapefruit spoon, use a serrated knife like a steak knife or a grapefruit knife to outline each section, then a regular spoon to scoop the grapefruit segments out.

🍊Serving suggestions

There are a few different ways to eat grapefruit. The recipe below is a really nice introduction into eating grapefruit for breakfast.

Once you peel it and cut it up like and orange, cut it up into smaller bite-sized pieces and put it in a bowl. Add some chopped banana, avocado, sunflower seeds and top it off with some maples syrup.

The fattiness of the avocado and the sweetness of the banana and maple syrup, really help to balance out the tartness of the grapefruit. When you top it with sunflower seeds, it adds a nice crunchy texture.

So, give this a try the next time you but grapefruit. I promise you will fall in love with grapefruit if you pair it with some sweet fruits.

This also goes well served with some egg-free french toast, tofu scramble with vegan bacon, or vegan banana pancakes.

❄️ Storing tips

This is great to make a big batch and keep it in the fridge, ready to go for a quick breakfast. The bananas will become a bit brown, but they will still taste good. Eat this within 2-3 days after making.

How do I pick out a good grapefruit?

Hold a few grapefruit at the grocery store and choose the heavier ones. You can't really tell if a grapefruit is ripe by its color, so it's best to go by its heaviness.Don't choose a grapefruit that is squishy, soft or wrinkly. They have gone bad.

When are grapefruits in season?

Grapefruits are typically a winter fruit. In America, they come from a few different places: Arizona, Texas, Florida and California. Grapefruits from Arizona and California come to the markets from January through August. Those from Florida and Texas are available from October through June
