If this is your first time owning a Dyson product, you are probably still getting familiar with how to use and maintain the device. Fortunately, Dyson vacuum cleaners, both cordless and corded models, are extremely easy and convenient to use, as well as to maintain in terms of emptying and cleaning out the canister. With the Dyson Cyclone v10 cordless vacuum cleaner, the cylinder that collects debris is easy to access and open, making your job of clearing out the rubbish that much easier!

It is important to note that maintaining the Dyson v10 does not stop at just emptying out the canister but cleaning the filters as well. The good news, however, is that the device comes equipped with warning lights that will immediately flash if the dust cup is full and/or if there is a problem with the filter. In this article, we will explain how to empty your Dyson Cyclone v10 vacuum cleaner and how to clean the filter to help extend the lifespan of the device. Read on!

Steps to Empty Dyson v10 Vacuum Cleaner Dust Cup

It’s always more convenient to have a transparent canister to see how much dirt has collected inside. If you allow the vacuum cleaner bin to overfill, you are doing the appliance a disservice and, in some cases, putting it at risk of damage. This is because overfilling causes the motor to work twice as hard which, in turn, leads to overheating. To prevent this from happening, the Dyson v10 has markings on the canister that show you the ‘maximum’ amount of rubbish it should hold before needing to be emptied out. Additionally, the light indicator will also flash when the dust cup is too full.

To empty your Dyson v10 Cyclone Vacuum Cleaner, follow the simple steps below:

Step 1

In order to open or release the cap of the canister, you must first detach the wand from it. To do this, locate the red button on the wand on the end that is attached to the dust cup; push it down to release the wand and set it aside.

Step 2

Hold the cylinder over a dustbin or tray (to catch the debris) and point it downward; grab hold of the lever on the bin which should be facing you while the device is held in this position. Push it down firmly and, in one fluid movement, the canister will get released and be pushed down while the cap simultaneously opens up. This will allow the dust cup to empty out.

Step 3

As the debris empties out of your Dyson Cyclone v10 bin, you might find some dust, hair, and other debris stuck inside or clinging to the sides of the canister; this can easily be cleaned out with a damp cloth or a narrow cleaning brush if your hand does not reach all the way in. If you are using a damp cleaning tool, be sure to let the interior of the bin dry completely before closing it back up.

Step 4

Once you have emptied and cleaned the dust cup thoroughly, close the cap and push the canister back down (it should click back into place). Just like releasing or opening the dust cup, pushing it back up should be done in one, clean motion. If the canister isn’t moving smoothly, check for any trapped debris at the bottom of the cup. Use an old toothbrush or dust cloth to clean this area before closing the canister again.

How to Remove & Clean Dyson v10 Filter

The filter of your vacuum cleaner bears large amounts of dust and debris over time and therefore, is prone to clogging. This significantly reduces the suction power and can also disrupt the normal functioning of the appliance. As we mentioned earlier, the Dyson v10 Cyclone Vacuum Cleaner will display a warning light to indicate a clog; this is typically situated in the filter.

While it is advisable to check the filter routinely and give it a quick clean, if you have waited too long and the warning light starts flashing, turn off the appliance immediately and clean the filter using the steps below:

  • Locate the filter on the back of the handle, twist it counter-clockwise, and pull it out.
  • Use a clean microfibre cloth to wipe around the area where the filter sits on the unit. You can also use a small brush to do this.
  • To clean the filter, rinse it thoroughly under cool running water. Be sure to wash off all the dust and debris.
  • If needed, use a soft brush to remove dirt that is clinging to the filter mesh.
  • Turn the filter upside down and leave it to dry on a rack.

WARNING: Do not put the filter back in until it is completely dry as any dampness can damage the electricals inside.

It should also be noted that the vacuum cleaner filter may get worn out or damaged over time and therefore, must be replaced with a new one to keep up the overall performance of the appliance. You can purchase a new Dyson v10 filter from the company itself; always buy original filters as duplicate products are often poorly made.

Remember, your vacuum cleaner works really hard to keep your floor and home clean so routine maintenance is critically important to keep the device running smoothly and optimally. Use the steps above to safely and efficiently empty your Dyson Cyclone v10 Vacuum Cleaner, and wash the vacuum filter thoroughly, too!
