Chansey is an iconic Normal-Type Pokémon that’s been around since Generation I. In most games, Chansey can evolve into Blissey if you level her up while her friendship level is super high. We’ll break down the evolution process in all the Pokémon series (including newer titles, like Scarlet and Violet), so you can add Blissey to your game in no time at all.
Below are the different Generations of Pokémon games:Generation I - Red, Blue, Green, Yellow Generation II - Gold, Silver, Crystal Generation III - Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, FireRed, LeafGreen Generation IV - Diamond, Pearl, Platinum, HeartGold, SoulSilver Generation V - Black, White, Black 2, White 2 Generation VI - X, Y, Omega Ruby, Alpha Sapphire Generation VII - Sun, Moon, Ultra Sun, Ultra Moon, Let's Go, Pikachu!, Let's Go, Eevee! Generation VIII - Sword, Shield, Pokémon Legends: Arceus, Brilliant Diamond, Shining Pearl
Generation IX - Scarlet, VioletHow to Evolve Chansey in Any Game
Chansey can evolve when her friendship level is 220 (Gen II to VII) or 160 (Gen VIII and newer). After confirming Chansey’s high friendship level with a friendship rater, level her up in battle or with a Rare Candy. After this, she will evolve into Blissey.
Steps
Section 1 of 5:How To Evolve Chansey into Blissey
-
Level up your Chansey while her friendship level is 160+ (Gen VIII and newer) or 220+ (Gen II to VII). After you’ve spent some time bonding with your Chansey (e.g., giving her a Soothe Bell, letting her stay in your active party, etc.), let her level up in battle, or level her up manually with the help of a Rare Candy. At that point, Chansey will evolve into Blissey (the last form of Chansey’s evolutionary line).[1] - Chansey evolves the same way in all Pokémon titles, including recent games like Pokémon Scarlet and Violet.
- Fun fact: From Gen II to VII, Chansey needed to have a 220 friendship level to evolve into Blissey. In Gen VIII and newer games, this was lowered to 160. You can see if your Chansey is above this threshold by speaking to the friendship rater NPC in your game.[2]

Ways to Increase Friendship with Chansey
-
1 Soothe Bell Soothe Bells are items that your Pokémon can hold. While held, the Bell helps increase your Pokémon’s friendship levels even more quickly.[3] - In Scarlet and Violet, you can purchase as many Soothe Bells as you’d like from Delibird Presents, or find one for free in Mesagoza.[4]
-
2 Luxury Ball When you’re first catching a Chansey, equip a Luxury Ball rather than a standard Poké Ball. The Luxury Ball gives a small increase to the friendship level of the Pokémon it catches.[5] - Luxury Balls can be bought in game.
-
3 Putting the Pokémon in your party Add your Chansey to your party (at least for the time being) rather than leaving her in a Box. -
4 Preventing the Pokémon from fainting When a Pokémon faints in battle, their friendship with you (understandably) goes down. If you end up battling with Chansey, be sure to switch her out before she totally faints. -
5 Visiting a Pokémon groomer Meeting with a Pokémon groomer (sometimes referred to as a “massage lady” or “massage girl”) can help increase your Chansey’s friendship levels.[6] -
6 Leveling Chansey up Leveling Chansey up will provide a boost of up to 5 friendship. You'll get less Friendship for leveling when Chansey has a high Friendship rating.[7] -
7 Giving Vitamins These are items that increase Chansey's stats, and each Vitamin will increase Friendship by up to 5. Again, the rewards will diminish as Chansey's Friendship increases. Vitamins include: - Protein
- HP Up
- Iron
- Zinc
- Calcium
- Carbos
- PP Up
- PP Max
- Rare Candy
-
8 Offering friendship-boosting berries Try to feed your Chansey berries, like:[8] - Grepa Berry
- Hondew Berry
- Kelpsy Berry
- Pomeg Berry
- Qualot Berry
- Tomato Berry
-
9 Avoiding herbal items Using herbal items during battle will take a massive hit on your friendship level. For example, using a Revival Herb can cost as many as 20 Friendship points, depending on the current Friendship level, while using Heal Powder will cost 5–10 points.[9] Advertisement
How to Know Your Chansey’s Friendship Level
-
Meet with the friendship rating NPC. All games and regions have an NPC that can examine your Chansey and let you know how high your friendship is. Based on the exact quote the friendship rater says, you can have a better idea of when your Chansey is ready to evolve.[10] - From Gen II to VII, Chansey needed to have a 220 friendship level to evolve into Blissey. In Gen VIII and newer games, this was lowered to 160.

Games Where You Can’t Evolve Chansey
-
1 Let’s Go, Pikachu and Let’s Go, Eevee LGP and LGE are remakes of Pokémon Yellow, a Gen I Pokémon game that was released on Game Boy in 1998. Since Blissey is a Gen II Pokémon that didn’t exist at the time Pokémon Yellow came out, it’s impossible to evolve Chansey in LGP or LGE. -
2 All Gen I games The original Pokémon games, like Pokémon Red, Green, Blue, and Yellow only feature the original 151 Pokémon from Gen I. Since Blissey is a Gen II Pokémon, it isn’t possible to evolve Chansey in any of these games. -
3 Pokémon LeafGreen and FireRed (until unlocking National Pokédex) In FireRed and LeafGreen, it’s not possible to evolve Chansey until you’ve unlocked the National Dex in-game, which is done by: - Having 60+ Pokémon in the Kanto Pokédex
- Traveling to One Island
- Becoming Pokémon Champion and entering the Hall of Fame
- Speaking with Professor Oak[11]

Victoria Top Answerer Double check that you are not pressing "B" at any point during the evolutionary sequence, and that your Chansey is not holding an Everstone. - If you’re playing an older Pokémon game (anywhere between Gen II and VII), your Chansey won’t be able to evolve into Blissey if it’s level 100. In Gen VIII and IX, this isn’t a problem—you can feed her a Rare Candy and she’ll evolve (even if she doesn’t level up).[12] Thanks Helpful 0 Not Helpful 0
