While exploring Subnautica players often discover they'll need some exotic resource that can only be found at its darkest depths. Kyanite is one such resource that can elevate gameplay but will require advanced equipment to collect. There are only a few locations to find kyanite, and none of them are easy to reach. Regardless players will be required to hunt some down eventually.
Kyanite is a rare material found mainly in areas below 1200 meters. This crafting component will only become necessary in the late game and has no early game uses. It resembles a large blue gemstone and can be found as solitary crystals, tall deposits, or short deposits. Kyanite is the only material in Subnautica that isn't guaranteed to drop resources when drilled, this is intentional and isn't a glitch. Tall kyanite deposits can yield as many as 22 crystals and shorter ones can only give a maximum of 12.

The only vehicle capable of reaching and harvesting kyanite deposits is the prawn suit. It will require the depth module MK1 to safely travel deep enough, and the prawn suit drill arm to gather the mineral from larger deposits. A moonpool will also be needed to craft the necessary depth upgrade and drill arm attachment for their prawn suit. If players expect to leave the safety of their prawn suit while searching for kyanite, they will also need a reinforced diving suit to avoid taking temperature-related damage.
Where To Find Kyanite In Subnautica
Kyanite can be found as deposits in Subnautica's Inactive Lava Zone and the connected Lava Lakes, it can also be found in raw crystal form in the Lava Castle as well as the previous two biomes. The Lava Castle is a giant mound found at the center of the large open chamber of the Inactive Lava Zone and has entrances on the north and south side. The Lava Lakes are found beneath the Inactive Lava Zone and has two access points, both of which can be found by following the river of flowing lava downward. There are only two entrances to the Inactive Lava Zone, and they are indicated by steep drops within the Lost River. Players can enter the Lost River from four different hidden openings in specific locations. These are found on the eastern border between the Mountains and the Bulb Zone, in the deeper northeastern section of the Grand Reef, in the northern portion of the Sea Treader's Path, and from underneath the Blood Kelp Islands.
Two kyanite will be needed to make a blue tablet, there is only one blue tablet in Subnautica, though two blue tablets will be necessary to unlock all the doors in the Primary Containment Facility. Kyanite is also required to create the thermal reactors for both the prawn suit and the cyclops. Among other materials, four kyanite will be required to build the Neptune's Fuel Reserve.
