Does your eyeshadow look blotchy or patchy when you try to blend it? Here are my favorite tips for getting a beautiful blend to prevent and fix patchy eyeshadow. You can use the eyeshadow you already have, just make sure that your products and brushes are good quality.

Tools and materials:

Mild cleanser or eye makeup remover
2 eyeshadow tones (peach and bronze were used in this tutorial)
Eyeshadow primer
Setting powder
Good quality eye makeup brushes
Cotton swabs
Eyeliner and mascara

Cleaning the eyelid with a cotton swab

1. Start with a clean eyelid

Use a mild cleanser or eye makeup remover with a cotton swab to gently wipe your eyelid clean. This will help remove any oils or sweat from your eyelid.

Applying primer to the lids

2. Apply eyeshadow primer

If you have particularly oily eyelids, skip any application of primer on your lids. Primers are generally oil-based so it will mix with the natural oil of your lid and produce even more oil.

Instead, apply an eyeshadow primer that creates a smooth eyelid and creates a base for your eyeshadow.

Blending the primer with a brush

Blend out the eyeshadow primer with a clean, small eye makeup brush.

Setting the primer with setting powder

Lightly set the eyeshadow primer with setting powder, especially in the crease.

3. Apply eyeshadow

Always use good quality eyeshadow and good quality makeup brushes. It really does make a difference to the final result.

Start with a peach-toned powder eyeshadow, applying it a little at a time to your lid above the crease.

How to avoid patchy eyeshadow

Tip: Pay attention to how you hold your eye makeup brush. Holding it too close to the bristles applies more pressure which can make your eyeshadow look blotchy. Instead, move your fingers away from the bristles on the brush handle to a point where you still have control of the brush without it applying too much pressure.

How to prevent patchy eyeshadow

Apply the same peach-toned eyeshadow under your lower lash line.

Applying eyeshadow with a brush

Now apply a deeper bronze shade of eyeshadow to your eyelid crease. Apply it bit by bit until you are happy with the density of it. If you see a blotchy spot, go over it with a bit of the lighter shade you used previously.

Using a small angled makeup brush

Use a small, angled eye makeup brush to apply some of the deeper bronze shade under your lower lash line.

Applying a shimmer eyeshadow

4. Add some shimmer

Apply a light shimmery eyeshadow all over your moveable eyelid. Start applying it with your fingertips, being careful to not get it in the crease. Then switch to a small eye makeup brush to blend it.

Fixing patchy eyeshadow

Run a clean fluffy eye makeup brush around all the eyeshadow edges to blend everything and get a seamless look.

Deepening the intensity of the color

If you’d like, you can deepen the intensity at the outer corners of your eyes with a bit more of the deeper bronze eyeshadow.

Applying eyeliner to the top lash line

5. Finish your eye makeup

You can finish the smooth, non-patchy eyeshadow technique by applying a bit of eyeliner to your top lash line.

Applying mascara to lashes

Curl your upper eyelashes and apply mascara to your upper and lower lashes.

Nice job. Another hint is to powder your eyelashes lightly with the setting powder or just a face powder. This will keep your lashes separated when apply mascara. A little at a time and build it up. The mascara takes the longest.
