If you’ve used Microsoft Word, image manipulation is relatively straightforward. You insert an image or paste it within your text, and double-clicking it gives you a number of image editing options right in front of you, including the option to flip the image horizontally or vertically.

Things work a little differently in Google Documents. Most people accustomed to MS-Word would get confused when they can’t find the “flip image” option. However, once you get to know the process, flipping an image in Google Docs will seem much more straightforward.

So let’s say you have a Google Document open with an image that you want to flip. You should follow these steps:

Select the image you want to flip by clicking it. You should see sizing handles all around it when you do.
Right-click it and select “Cut” or just press Ctrl+x (Cmd+x for Mac). The photo should disappear.
Go to the menu bar and select “Insert” (Fourth option from left).
Hover to “Drawing.” In the subsequent submenu, select “+new.” This selection will open a small window titled “Drawing” on top of your document.
Press Ctrl+v (Cmd+v for Mac) to paste the image you cut in step 2. The image will be pasted in the Drawing window.
Among the options in the Drawing window, you can see one called “Actions.” Click it and scroll down to the “Rotate” option.
In the submenu that opens when you hover over “Rotate,” you will see four options; two for left and right rotation and two for horizontal and vertical flipping.
Select the applicable option to flip the image horizontally or vertically.
Click on “Save and Close.”

And you’re done. Your target image will now be flipped the way you wanted it.
