Napkin folding can transform an ordinary dinner table into a charming display. Swan napkins make a simple and elegant presentation, and, best of all, you can fold several in a matter of minutes. The next time you have guests, use either paper napkins or cloth napkins for these lovely creations.

Making a Swan with a Paper Napkin

  1. Step 1 Start with a square paper napkin. 1 Start with a square paper napkin. Place it on a clean working surface in front of you, oriented as a diamond so that one of the corners is pointing towards you.
    • White napkins are a classic choice here, but you can also use colored or patterned napkins. If using a patterned or colored napkin, begin with the pattern or colored side down.

    • Reinforce the fold by running your fingers along it. It is important to have a crisp line here.

    • The part that goes past it will turn into the swan's "beak," so let that inform how you make your fold.

You should begin to see your swan taking shape. Reinforce the creases along the bottom and front of the swan by running your forefinger and thumb along them.

    • Note that you can use either a square or a rectangular napkin for this step.
    • Napkins of stiffer material may be easier to work with.

    • If you are using a rectangular napkin, make your rolls so that they run the long way.
    • To be sure that your rolls are equal halves, make a light crease through the center of the napkin for reference by folding it in half and unfolding. (If you're using a rectangular napkin, make the crease so that it runs the longer length of the cloth.)

To fold a square paper napkin into a swan, lay the napkin flat and turn it so that one of the corners is pointed toward you in a “diamond” orientation. Fold the napkin in half vertically to make a triangle, then open it up again and flip it over so the crease is facing down. Fold the right corner just past the center crease, then do the same thing with the left corner. Your diamond should now be folded into thirds. Grab the edge of the top flap and fold it back on itself, making a new crease parallel to the center line. Pull the bottom flap out and do the same thing. Take the bottom corner of the napkin and fold it up so it extends just past the top corner. Fold down the very tip of the new top corner to make the beak of the swan. Flip the napkin over and fold it in half along the first crease you made. Lay it down on its side so you see the swan in profile, then fold up the flap on the bottom of the shape to make half of the base. Flip the napkin over again and do the same thing on the other side.
