Season 6Season 5Season 4Season 3Season 2Season 1 How To Get Away With Murder Season 6 Review : A whirlwind end to a rollercoaster show[email protected], TNN, Updated: Sep 14, 2020, 10.57 AM ISTAfter five seasons of blood-soaked mysteries, tantalising twists and turns, courtroom drama, and sinful alliances, 'How to Get Away With Murder' finally answers if Annalise and the Keating 4 do indeed manage to get away with murder in their sixth and final season.In its debut season, the show introduced the brilliant criminal law professor Annalise Keating, her loyal assistants Frank Delfino and Bonnie Winterbottom, and her five specially selected students: Wes Gibbins, Connor Walsh, Michaela Pratt, Asher Millstone, and Laurel Castillo. Five seasons later, Annalise is in rehab for drug problems. Asher, Michaela, Connor and Oliver (Hampton) are desperate for answers regarding Laurel's disappearance and Wes is well…dead. But at the heart of the show still lies the same conflict – the one murder that changed everything forever and led to a domino effect of many more crimes. Now, Annalise must face the crimes she’s accrued since the murder that kicked off the ABC drama in 2014. The show comes to a fitting end, but fitting, here, does not mean satisfying. As usual the show follows its trademark fast cuts and smart edits and builds up a fast and suspenseful first half but slows down towards the second half. While the main tease of the season was a flash-forward signaling Wes's return at Annalise's funeral, it turns out to be only partially honest and gimmicky. With a lot of details missed and many questions unanswered, not every dangling string gets tied up before curtain call. And this flaw has been a constant throughout its six-season run, making 'HTGAWM' a show that tends to bulldoze through the story rather than make everything connect. Dissatisfying, but not unexpected.But let’s come back to the main reason every viewer held on to this Peter Nowalk creation for 90 odd episodes – the magnificent Viola Davis as the indomitable Annalise Keating. She is a complicated, fascinating antihero and as far as protagonists go, she is one of the greatest flawed female characters on television of all time. Her performance throughout the show has been constant and unwavering. And this season we get full closure on this beautifully layered character that brought some much-needed representation to black and queer people on mainstream television. Her character not only gets a moving courtroom monologue which will go on to become one of TV’s finest moments but also a proper send-off.And maybe that is why sometimes it feels like this season is so focused on cementing the legacy of Annalise Keating that there isn’t room for character development anywhere else. While killing off important characters is nothing new to this show, it should matter that Annalise loses the only two people who were Annalise’s rock (Yes, we are talking about Frank and Bonnie), and yet, these storylines are inexplicably cut short. Series finales are often about emotional goodbyes and full circle moments and closures. But, 'HTGAWM' fails to make a lot of that in their runtime for characters other than Annalise.The show might have started out as a courtroom drama but in the later seasons, as the drama took the limelight, the jargon-filled powerful courtroom theatrics took a backseat. What this season focuses on achieving essentially is reeling back in most of the complicated web of lies and crimes that the previous seasons created. It goes beyond the crimes and uses multiple themes like trauma and its long-term psychological effects, systemic racism and sexism, and paranoia and privacy to explain to its viewers why crimes and the humans who commit it are so complicated. And that makes this season of 'HTGAWM' one of the best in terms of writing.
