Clay is an important resource in Stardew Valley and is used in many recipes. There are a few basic ways to get clay. You're going to need the hoe and patience!
Clay
Used in crafting and construction.
Sells for 20G
Digging in dirt or sand with the hoe is the most common way to get clay and by far the easiest. Find a dirt patch and get to hitting the ground. Once a tile is tilled, hitting it again won't do anything, so keep moving around throughout your farm and the valley until you've got what you need. Clay doesn't appear frequently, but you'll get what you need with time.
You may also find it when digging up Artifact spots. Artifact Spots look like three little worms sticking out of the ground, to dig up an Artifact Spot you’ll have to use a hoe, other tools won’t work.
When you crack open a geode, you may also find clay.
You may also receive clay as a gift. During the Feast Of The Winter Star (the final festival in the yearly town events), if you are paired up with Jas or Vincent, you may receive clay as a gift. Clay can also be given as a gift, but it is disliked or hated by all residents.
