What Does Ungated Mean on Amazon? 🤔
So, what is Amazon ungating? Getting “ungated on Amazon” refers to the process of getting approval from Amazon to be able to sell in restricted categories or to list restricted brands.
Approval is necessary because Amazon restricts sellers from listing products in certain categories, and sub-categories, and from selling particular brands.
Why Are Some Categories Gated?
Amazon introduced gating policies for various reasons. They wanted to maintain the quality of products to make sure customers were confident buying on the Amazon marketplace.
By only letting verified sellers list these products, they can reduce the number of counterfeits, particularly in categories like clothing and electronics.
Gating also helps address issues around product safety, which are particularly important when it comes to food, dangerous items, health products, supplements, and children’s products.
Amazon also has to comply with various legal and regulatory requirements in different countries, and vetting third-party sellers can help with this. This is why a license or certification might be required for some categories.
Some larger brands like Lego, Nike, and Disney may be gated in order to protect their brand integrity and fight against counterfeits. Some brands also prefer to strictly control their supply chain.
What Are the Advantages of Getting Ungated on Amazon?
There will be less competition in the gated categories and therefore more opportunities for sourcing great deals.
Getting ungated now will also mean you avoid any new rules and regulations as Amazon continues to make ungating more difficult.
In gated categories, you tend to get more experienced sellers. This means there will be fewer inexperienced penny pinchers constantly undercutting prices in a race to the bottom.
Benefits of Getting Ungated 🚀
Getting ungated on Amazon has lots of advantages for sellers:
- Access to less competitive and often more profitable product categories.
- Ability to expand your product line and diversify your inventory.
- Increased credibility as an Amazon seller.
- Potential for higher sales volumes and improved profit margins.
Amazon sellers usually find their ROI (return on investment) is much higher once they are selling in gated categories.
Amazon are adding more rules and regulations all the time so we recommend you get ungated now before Amazon tightens up the rules further.
Amazon Restricted Categories That Require Approval 🔐

Amazon usually adds stricter rules to categories that contain potentially harmful products, or products that are more likely to be counterfeit or fake.
Categories, or brands, that need ungating can change over time and can also depend on how old your seller account is.
There are categories and brands that are not restricted and we usually recommend new sellers start selling products in these categories first. Once you have more selling history, it can also be easier to ungate restricted categories.
📝 For a list of categories that do not require ungating, please check out this page: Amazon Gated Categories & Restricted Products◥
Requirements for Getting Amazon Category Approval
Before you start your ungating journey to increase your chances of getting approved in Amazon categories, you need to ensure your seller account meets some of Amazon’s minimum requirements.
✅ A Professional Amazon Seller AccountOnly sellers signed up to a Professional seller plan are able to ungate restricted categories and brands. This costs $39.99 per month and there are additional benefits, such as lower selling fees.
You will need the following to sign up:
- Bank account and routing number
- Internationally chargeable credit card
- Government-issued ID
- Tax information
- Phone number
✅ Local Returns Address and Language SupportYou must be able to provide a return delivery address in the local country (Amazon provide this if you’re doing FBA).You must be able to provide local language support for customer service in the country in which you wish to sell (got to love Google Translate 😊).
✅ Good Seller MetricsCheck your ‘Account Health’ in Seller Central and make sure you have a low Order Defect Rate (ODR), Late Shipment Rate (LSR), and Pre-Fulfillment Cancel Rate (PFCR).
For successful Amazon category approval, you should aim to beat these metrics:
- < 4% = Late Shipment Rate (LSR) ✅
- < 2.5% = Pre-Fulfillment Cancel Rate (PFCR) ✅
- < 1% = Order Defect Rate (ODR) ✅
How to Get Ungated on Amazon in Restricted Categories
Follow these 7 steps to check if you need approval to sell any product on Amazon. If approval is required, we show you how to get ungated in any restricted categories or for particular brands.
✅ Step 1: Sign up for an Amazon Professional Seller account, which costs $39.99 per month.
✅ Step 2: In the main dashboard of your Seller Central Account, click on the ‘Inventory’ tab.
✅ Step 3: Select ‘Add a product‘ from the drop-down menu and enter the ASIN, UPC, part number, or name of the product you want to sell until you find a match.
✅ Step 4: If there are restrictions, it should say ‘Listing Limitations Apply‘. Click on this to see more details.
✅ Step 5: You can now click on ‘Apply to Sell‘ to begin the ungating process. Some applications may be auto-approved depending on how old your seller account is and which other categories you are already ungated in.
✅ Step 6: If you are not auto-approved, then you will need to buy products from an authorized wholesaler. Find a wholesaler who can provide invoices that include a name and address that matches those for your Amazon seller account.
✅ Step 7: Once you have purchased the number of products requested by Amazon (usually 10 units), then scan the wholesaler invoices and upload them along with your selling application. 🚀
Invoice Requirements for Amazon Approval 🤓
You will need to upload various documents and information to complete the application. The most important is the invoice.
✅ Provide Original InvoicesProviding the correct invoices is usually the key to an application being successful, so spend time making sure you include everything Amazon wants.
Make sure your invoices meet these Amazon requirements:
- Invoice name and address match your Seller Account name and registered address.
- Invoices should be dated within the last 90 days.
- The invoices must not be doctored or altered in any way.
- Use invoices from authorized distributors or manufacturers.
- Do not use retail receipts, i.e. Walmart.
- Invoice includes distributors’ name, address, and phone number. Amazon may contact the supplier to check they are legitimate.
- Includes detailed product information, including quantities, prices, and UPC or Manufacturer Part Number.
- Clear indication that it’s an invoice (not a quote or pro forma).
✅ Use Authorized WholesalersRemember to only use genuine authorized wholesalers based in your country. Always avoid clearance or liquidation sites for ungating.
📝 We have a guide to finding authorized suppliers here: Finding Wholesale Suppliers and Distributors for Amazon FBA. 👈🏼
PRO TIP: Some distributors are now familiar with Amazon’s ungating requirements and may offer “ungating invoices” that are specifically formatted to meet Amazon’s criteria. There is no harm in asking if this is an option. 💡
Before uploading, it’s worth investing some time checking your application includes everything needed and is presented in a way an Amazon rep can easily understand. You don’t want to wait weeks for a reply to be told something is missing and then have to resubmit and wait another few weeks.
Can I Use Retail Invoices to Get Ungated?
Trying to use retail invoices, including Amazon invoices, to get ungated on Amazon is generally not recommended and they are usually not accepted. This is because retail invoices don’t establish the brand owner is permitting you to sell their products.
Another problem is retail receipts usually don’t include the detailed information Amazon requires for ungating.
Ungating for Retail Arbitrage Sellers
Retail arbitrage (RA) sellers face more challenges when it comes to getting ungated on Amazon. The nature of RA sourcing can make it more difficult to obtain the official invoices typically required for category approval.
Some sellers have reported success using retail invoices, but this is getting less common as Amazon gets stricter. You could try using retail invoices, but you may just be wasting more time and delaying the ungating process.
💡 Tips for Successful Retail Arbitrage Ungating:
- Start with less restricted categories: Begin with categories that have lower barriers to entry and work your way up.
- Build a strong selling history and ‘Account Health’ metrics selling in ungated categories first. This usually allows other categories to be easily auto-ungated without an application.
- We recommend arbitrage sellers focus on buying from authorized distributors. Even if you are doing retail arbitrage, you can still open wholesale accounts purely for getting ungated. This is probably the easiest way to ungate the stricter categories.
Additional Documents That May Be Required
For some specific categories or brands, you may be asked for some extra documents, such as:
- Business license or professional certification (if applicable)
- Business tax information
- Product safety certifications or compliance documents
- Brand authorization letters (for brand-specific ungating)
- Product images and detailed descriptions
- UPC codes or GTINs for your products
Timeframe & Costs of Ungating
How Much Does It Cost to Get Ungated on Amazon? 💰
The costs of getting ungated on Amazon can vary widely. Most standard categories should be free with purchasing the requested products for the application being the only cost.
Some categories, such as Fine Jewelry, Watches, Collectible Coins, and Fine Art, will require a non-refundable application fee of up to $5,000.
There may also be specific certificates and licenses required which incur further costs.
You can also choose to use an ungating service which costs around $1000, but make sure you avoid services that use fake invoices as this could get your account suspended.
How Long Does It Take to Get Ungated on Amazon? ⌚
The time it takes to get ungated varies depending on the following factors:
- The complexity of the category.
- The time of year with Q4 being the slowest.
- How thorough your application was.
- Your seller status.
- The age of your seller account.
- Which other categories you have already ungated.
For most standard categories, it can take anything from a few days to a few weeks. More tightly restricted categories like Luxury Beauty can take several months.
Some categories, like Apparel, can be instantly auto-ungated, depending on your seller account status.
If Your Application Fails 😫
If your application fails, it’s worth simply requesting approval again. Check for anything you may have missed or add anything extra Amazon has requested.
Some sellers send in the exact same application multiple times before it is approved, and it seems to just depend on which customer service rep happens to look at the request.
It’s important you don’t send in a new application for the same category until you get a response from Amazon.
Strategies for Ungating Specific Categories or Brands
Different categories on Amazon have unique requirements and strategies for ungating. Let’s explore some specific approaches for some popular gated brands and categories.
How to Sell Nike on Amazon 👟
Nike is a highly sought-after brand on Amazon, and you will need to get ungated to sell Nike products.
You will need a Professional Seller Plan and good ‘Account Health’ stats.
You will then need to upload either:
- 1 letter from Nike authorizing you to sell their products
- At least 1 purchase invoice for products from a manufacturer or distributor.
It will be incredibly difficult to get a permission letter from Nike unless you are a reasonably established company as they don’t like to supply Amazon or eBay sellers. 😥
If you can’t get a permission letter, then it might be easier to purchase at least 10 units from an authorized supplier and upload a fully detailed invoice to prove it.
Sellers have reported using invoices from Foot Locker and Academy Sports & Outdoors to get ungated in Nike on Amazon, but we haven’t verified this. 🤷♂️
How to Get Ungated in Toys on Amazon 🧸
The Toys category itself is not gated for new sellers and we actually recommend it as a good category to get started with. However, some of the sub-categories and popular brands like Lego, Nintendo, Disney, Pokemon, and Nerf will require ungating.
To ungate these sub-categories or brands, you will need either an invoice for 10 units from an authorized distributor or a permission letter from the brand owner.
You may also be required to provide the following documents:
- Test reports from an CPSC accepted laboratory showing that the product complies with the regulations, standards, and requirements listed above
- Children’s Product Certificate (CPC)
- Either a test report or product images as evidence of compliance with CPSA Section 14(a)(5) (Tracking label)
Additional Christmas Requirements 🎅
Amazon tends to put in extra seller requirements during the holiday season, mainly targeted at ‘Merchant Fulfilled‘ sellers. If you want to maximise profits from toys in this very busy period, make sure you meet these before Q4 starts:
✅ Seller Metrics: Order Defect Rate below 1%, Pre-Fulfillment Cancel Rate below 1.75%, and Late Shipment Rate below 4%.
✅ Shipped Product Volume: You need to have shipped a certain number of products before Q4 starts across all categories.
Toy sales increase massively in Q4 and the run-up to Christmas, so this can be a very lucrative category to sell in. Some Toy sellers will make 70% or more of their annual sales in Q4.
How to Get Ungated in Grocery on Amazon 🥗
Like Toys, the main Grocery category is not gated but subcategories are with a focus on food safety and handling. As with all ungating, you will first need to match the basic seller performance targets:
- Order defect rate: < 1%
- Pre-fulfillment cancel rate: < 2.5%
- Late shipment rate: < 4%
There are then some quite complicated rules and requirements you must meet to sell in Grocery & Gourmet Foods, which include:
- Food must be properly prepared, packaged, sealed, and labeled.
- You must be licensed, or have approval from the relevant government agency for the products you plan to sell.
- You must ensure your products and business operations comply with federal and state laws. This includes laws not described in Amazon policies.
- Sell all Grocery & Gourmet Food products as new. You cannot list used products.
- Food is viewed as date-sensitive. It must have an expiration date permanently marked on every unit, unless the product is exempt. This includes every unit that is shipped, and every unit displayed for sale.
- Enclose and seal food in packaging suitable for shipping. It must keep food from contamination, spoiling, melting, and damage.
- You must ship food with enough of its shelf life remaining. You must not remove or alter the expiration date.
- You must list Grocery & Gourmet Food products using the manufacturer’s UPC code.

There are also additional rules around refrigerated, frozen, and temperature-controlled food and raw agricultural commodities. You may also need to consider registration of food facilities with the FDA.
Due to these strict requirements, we would recommend avoiding this category if you are a new seller, manufacturing your own private label product, as they add a lot of complexity to an already difficult process.
How to Get Ungated in Beauty on Amazon 💄
The top-level Beauty category is ungated and recommended for new sellers. However, many brands and sub-categories require approval from Amazon to sell in. This is because the Beauty category was getting a lot of fake/counterfeit products listed. The beauty category has become increasingly strict due to concerns about counterfeit products.
One of the main sub-categories that needs ungating is ‘Cosmetics, Skin, and Hair Care‘. This is a huge category and a great one to ungate early on. It opens up the selling of products such as skin creams, perfumes, lipsticks, fingernail polishes, temporary tattoos, eye and facial makeup, shampoos, hair colors, toothpastes, and deodorants.
As with all ungating, you must meet the basic account seller performance targets and you will also need to buy a minimum of 10 products from authorized distributors. You might also need to submit a permission letter from the brand owner for big brands like L’Oréal and Maybelline.
There are also quite strict rules for Cosmetics focused on packaging, labeling, FDA approval, ingredients, and the inclusion of any prohibited substances.
Sellers have reported using wholesalers like Price Master and Frontier Co-op to get ungated. 🤔

15 Top Tips for Getting Ungated on Amazon!
1. Use an authorized, official wholesaler and not a cash and carry, clearance, or liquidation site.
2. Look at getting ungated as a totally separate process from selling in a gated category. Getting ungated is essentially a tick-box exercise, so make sure you tick all the boxes.
3. Don’t use your own Private Label products for the ungating application – buy brand-name products from official wholesalers instead. Once ungated, you can then sell your Private Label product in the ungated category.
4. Always ensure your chosen wholesaler’s product has a matching ASIN on Amazon, which is available to purchase.
5. Always ensure your chosen ungating products are categorized correctly and are only listed in the restricted category you are trying to ungate.
Make sure they don’t also appear in a non-gated category or your application is more likely to fail.
6. Choose products for the ungating process that you can either use at home or easily sell on eBay or Amazon.
You are not trying to make any profit on these items. The items are purely for the ungating process and to unlock Amazon restricted products.
7. Find a wholesaler with a range of products that will allow you to ungate more than one restricted Amazon category so you can save on delivery charges.
8. Don’t try to do it ‘on the cheap’ – do it properly to give yourself the best chance of success. The benefits of getting Amazon category approval are huge, so it is worth doing it right.
9. Make it as easy as possible for the Amazon representative rather than as easy as possible for you! Make your application fantastic and give them every reason to say YES!
10. Ensure your invoices are dated within 90 days. The more recent, the better.
11. Do not use handwritten invoices and make sure the details match the exact name and address on your Seller Account.
12. Buy enough products to satisfy the requirements for your chosen category. If anything, you should get more than required.
13. Once you’ve found your wholesaler, contact Amazon and check the wholesaler is accepted for ungating before you buy any products. Amazon won’t give you a list of wholesalers to use, but they will usually say YES or NO to a particular wholesaler if asked.
14. Getting ungated on Amazon can be a GAME CHANGER for your business and the process can be either SUPER EASY, REALLY CHALLENGING, or anything in between.
Ungating can take multiple attempts, so don’t give up and just keep jumping through whatever hoops Amazon puts in your way…
15. Check subcategories every month by going to ‘Inventory> Add a Product’ and then entering the title or an ASIN from that category. You may get auto-ungated.
As your seller account gets more established, you might find you can get more subcategories auto-approved.
Amazon Ungating Services 😬

If time is in short supply, you may prefer to have all the information given to you so you can focus on selling products and making money. Most sellers are keen to get ungated as easily and quickly as possible.
There are several third-party Amazon ungating services available for sellers to speed up the process, which can cost around $1000 per category.
We recommend being extremely wary of these services, as lots of them will use fake invoices to help you get ungated. This could lead to your Amazon seller account being suspended for using forged or manipulated documents.
You should stick to services or tools that will simply help you with the process rather than doing it all for you. This will ensure the invoices being used are genuine based on real purchases you have made from suppliers. A company that does it all for you can only be using fake invoices and this is very risky.
If you follow the information and instructions on this page, you can see that getting ungated is not that difficult and therefore there is no reason to cut corners and get permanently banned from selling on Amazon.
