How to Get WaterBy Matthew AdlerLuis Joshua GutierrezBrendan Graeber+13 moreupdatedOct 6, 2022

As is true in most survival games, you'll need to prioritize managing your hunger and thirst in Grounded. Becoming incredibly thirsty will have adverse effects - including slowly losing health until you drink something, so understanding all the ways you can quench your thirst is important to survival. Below you will find information on various ways to locate water sources.

How to Locate Dirty Water Sources

Though it's not ideal, standing water can be used in a tight spot to alleviate concerns about thirst levels. However, drinking from these sources will rapidly increase your hunger, so only consider them if you're about to or already are taking damage from being thirsty, or if you have plenty of food ready to compensate.

Most sources of dirty water can be found by following indented paths and looking for puddles, like the path you find when you first start the game that leads from the baseball to the Field Station and Mysterious Machine. Most water is located in these recessed areas, but you can also find a large pond to the north past the oak tree that is a big source of dirty water.

Locating Clean Water Sources - Dew, Nectar, and Juice

When you're tasked with locating water at the start of the Walkthrough, you might head for the nearest puddle. If you do, your objective will change to "find clean water." When possible, it is better to locate sources of clean water to quench your thirst without any adverse effects. Luckily, there are several sources to choose from, and if you plan well, you can even start storing water for future use.

  • Dew Drops often form along the tops of grass but you might find more appear overnight. If you want to knock the dew to the ground, you can tap the grass blade with a weapon. You can also reach them by jumping on blades of grass and reaching higher points. It's also possible to jump up and slurp a Dew Drop if you can get close enough.
  • Aphid Honeydew can be picked up as you explore. You'll see plenty of Aphids scuttling about and golden drops of Honeydew will be left on the floor on occasion. This can be used to restore thirst and hunger. You can carry this around with you or place it in storage to use later on.

  • Certain areas of the backyard are home to abandoned Juice Boxes and soda cans. These locations actually perpetually release small pieces of juice, soda, or water - usually once a day. If you find such places some will be marked on your map. Others, you can leave a Trail Marker to remember where they are, and be sure to check if the liquid has rolled downhill when looking for more. Don't forget to check out our Juice Box locations page so you know where to start.
  • Larger flowers - like the ones near the oak tree, rose garden, and across the pond will often have small bits of nectar pooled around the base of the flowers. Like Aphid Honeydew, these can be stockpiled for future use!

Dew Containers and Collectors

The key to thriving in this shrunken world is getting to a point where you don't have to worry about food and drink as much. Luckily, you can unlock certain recipes to help in this regard.

  • Analyze Crude Rope to unlock the recipe for creating a Canteen.
  • Find Acorns by the oak tree and break them open with a hammer. Analyze Acorn Shells for Water Containers to help store excess water. You can store up to 6 drops of liquid in these.

  • This will also unlock the Acorn Shovel. Shovels are essential for Grub Hide, which is what you'll need to craft a Canteen. You can use the shovel to dig up grubs that are underground and kill them to nab yourself some Grub Hide.
