1. It needs a trim
I know it sounds counter-intuitive but you will need regular trims to grow curly hair long.
Curl shrinkage means it can seem like curly hair takes longer to grow than straight hair types but a trim every 10-12 weeks will help keep your ends looking and feeling great and getting rid of those split ends will pay off in the long run – I promise!
2. Use treatments regularly
Curly hair needs a lot of moisture to look its best and stay in good condition.
You can give your curls a boost by using a mask every 1-2 weeks. There are lots of great mask treatments out there. Here are some of my favourites:

3. Use gentle heat only
Heated tools can be damaging to curly hair, leading to damage and breakage, so it is best to use them sparingly.
When you do need to use heat to diffuse, use a dryer that has a low setting and always use a heat protectant. This will help to grow curly hair long!

4. Be careful with elastics if you want to grow curly hair long
Curly hair is more fragile than straight hair, so be careful when using elastics to pull your hair back.
It’s possible to break hair by pulling it back in a ponytail using a regular hair elastic, try using a silk or satin scrunchie instead.

5. Use pre-shampoo treatments
Before shampooing your hair, do a pre-shampoo treatment with oil.
This will help prevent damage caused by friction during the washing process. I usually use coconut oil for this. Apply the oil to dry hair, leave for 10-20 minutes and then shampoo and condition as usual.
6. Sleep on silk
Reduce overnight friction and moisture loss caused by cotton pillowcases.
Sleep on a silk or satin pillowcase or use a silk bonnet.
7. Always use conditioner (controversial)
I feel like this is the most controversial tip, because when I say ‘use conditioner’ I mean ALL over your hair!
I know that a common tip is to use conditioner on the mid-lengths and ends only but the hair near the root still needs attention.
After shampooing, it’s important to rebalance the PH of your hair and add conditioning ingredients to moisturise your hair since most shampoos will remove your hair’s natural oils.
The hair near your scalp is still hair, and hair that you want to be in good condition for years to come if you want long hair!
