I need tips on growing melons. I planted the seeds in a row just like wheat but they grew to a brown stalk and stopped, so I thought it was stupid to put them in a row since they need space to grow multiple fruits. Then I planted them 4 block away from eachother but still they aren't growing. Is there anything that I should know about melons or do they grow incredibly slow and I have to wait? they grow incredibly slow and I've heard they never bear fruit, reports of people leaving them for 24 hours without it, probably bugged. Rollback Post to Revision RollBack Notch: There is so much potential in what can be made with Minecraft, it would be a shame to see it get stuck as being just a block building game.

Have you tilled (Used hoe on) the adjacent blocks to the vine? Melons will only grow on tilled soil that is adjacent to the vine. Rollback Post to Revision RollBack GENERATION 28: The first time you see this, copy it into your sig on any forum and add 1 to the generation. Social experiment.

Oh I haven't! Alright then I'll do that, but since they grow slowly, wouldn't it be hard for me to till the soil frequently? :/ Rollback Post to Revision RollBack

To properly farm melons you need a 3x3 area of tilled and watered soil for each seed. Place the seed in the middle and then wait. That way there is virtually zero chance of the seed not generating a melon. Then when the melon is harvested, break the stem to get between 1-3 seeds, which you can then replant. It takes about one full day and night for a seed to generate a melon this way. There is currently no way to speed up the process. Rollback Post to Revision RollBack Because I can: Best reason ever.

Do not break the stem! chop the melon with an axe and you will get 3 to 8 slices of melon and 3 to 10 minutes later your stem will produce another melon indefinitely! If you want more seeds place one slice of melon in a crafting grid and you will get one seed per. Just remember to till the field the melon grew on. Once a 'stem' matures (dark greenish-brown), it'll have a chance to spawn a melon west, east, south, or north of itself - not diagonally. If a Stem spawns a Melon, and it is beside (east, west, north, or south) of another stem directly, that stem will CONNECT to this melon, disabling it's ability to produce its own melon. Thus, you want a system where you have a + shape of shape around you, without stalks touching the + shapes edge. Hard to explain... :tongue.gif: Rollback Post to Revision RollBack

Also, the melons will ruin the cultivation of the square they appear on. So take a hoe with you when you harvest them so you can re-plow the ground for the next harvest. I have a feeling melons will be nerfed. Although it's kind of a pain to have to eat so many of them (each slice gives one corndog) They are BY FAR the quickest and easiest way to to get food. (Once you find seeds that is.) With just 4 plants, watermelon became my main food source, producing more food, faster, than a wheat farm and spending a day fishing. (which are numbers #3 and #2 respectively.) There were basically NO animals on my SMP server...even though I never killed anything. Rollback Post to Revision RollBack

I have a functioning melon farm: (Dirt = tilled soil Seeds = melon seeds) :soil: :soil: :Water: :Water: :soil: :soil: :soil: :....: :Water: :Water: :....: :soil: :soil: :soil: :Water: :Water: :soil: :soil: :soil: :soil: :Water: :Water: :soil: :soil: :soil: :....: :Water: :Water: :....: :soil: :soil: :soil: :Water: :Water: :soil: :soil: Works perfectly fine for me, I'll have four melons in roughly 2-3 minutes. Ok, so I made this system: :soil: :soil: :soil: :soil: :....: :soil: :soil: :soil: :soil: but it gives only one melon. I thought the stem could produce 4 melons, given the space. So is this normal and I remembered it wrong or should I do something to produce more? Rollback Post to Revision RollBack
