How to Hang a Mezuzah
  • The mezuzah should be hung inside the door frame on the right side as you enter the house or the room.
  • It should be affixed to the inside upper third of the right side of the door frame (also known as the doorpost).
  • Position the mezuzah at an angle with the top of the mezuzah (usually the part with the Hebrew letter shin that looks like a hand with three fingers pointing inside the room or house).
  • As you position the mezuzah mark the places on top and bottom where the screws will be screwed into the frame.
  • Take the mezuzah down and screw the screws partially into the marked spots.
  • Now unscrew the screws and set aside.
  • With clean hands, roll the scroll (klaf) tightly without creasing it, from right to left, with the writing on the inside. There should be three small letters on the outer side of the scroll forming the Hebrew word Shaddai (Almighty).
  • Some people like to wrap the wound up scroll in a piece of parchment paper or plastic wrap to keep it free of debris and so it stays tightly wound.
  • Place scroll inside mezuzah with the letter shin (that looks a hand with three fingers) with the fingers pointing toward the top of the mezuzah (the part that goes toward the inside of the room). Hold mezuzah in place where it will be screwed to the doorpost.
  • At this point it is customary to recite the blessing for hanging the mezuzah:
Baruch atah Adonai eloheinu melech ha-olam asher kidshanu b’mitzvotahv vitzivanu likboah mezuzah. .בָּרוּךְ אַתָּה ה’ אֱלֹקינוּ מֶלֶךְ הָעוֹלָם, אֲשֶׁר קִדְּשַׁנוּ בְּמִצְו‌ֹתָיו וְצִוָּנוּ לִקְבּוֹעַ מְזוּזָה
  • Continuing to hold mezuzah in place, screw in first the bottom screw and then the top screw until they just touch the glass. Be careful not to press too firmly or the glass may crack!
