With Christmas on its way, it’ll soon be time to bring out your holiday decor and hang stockings on the fireplace. Even if your fireplace doesn’t have a mantel or isn’t made of a material that allows you to attach stockings, you’ll be happy to know there are many other ways to get a cozy holiday look and feel.

Conventional Ways to Hang Holiday Stockings

There are many ways to hang your Christmas stockings that have worked practically forever. For example, you could just use a hammer and nails to get the job done. Can’t or won’t use nails? That’s okay, too, because there are many alternative solutions. For example, you could:

• Place heavy paperweights on your mantel and secure stockings underneath.
• Use adhesive hooks or “s” hooks to create a spot for hanging.
• Attach a piece of yarn or twine to your mantel for clipping on empty stockings.
• Attach a curtain rod to your mantel with command hooks for easy hanging.
• Buy mantel clips from your local hardware store.

A Different Location

You don’t necessarily have to hang your stockings near your fireplace; if you want to do something different this year, give the rest of your home a good once-over. Can you hang stockings at the end of your bed, from the dining room table, or in your living room?

A bookshelf that sits near your fireplace can be another great location for your stockings. Or, you can combine decorations with warm holiday fun by hanging your stockings in a main window.

If you have a staircase, you have yet another great location. Or you can display them on your front door or even your coffee table.

Repurpose

Some of the items you may already have in your home can make great places for hanging Christmas stockings. For example, you could repurpose your coat rack by hanging stockings from it instead.

Another great stocking holder is an older accordion-style coat rack. Hang your stockings at different levels, and then use the remaining pegs to hang other Christmas decorations.

Weight – Consider what your stockings will weigh when they’re full of goodies, and then ensure that whatever you’re using to hang them will be able to handle that weight.

Height and length – If you are hanging your stockings from a mantel, you’ll want to consider the mantel’s height. Aim for the toe of each stocking to be 6-8 inches above the fire surround portion of your fireplace. Consider height when hanging stockings from stairs, ladders, and wardrobe stands. Ensure that you go high enough to make your stockings visible. Avoid going so low that your stockings touch the floor.

Create a tradition – Move the newly filled stockings to outside the bedroom doors or at the bottom of the beds of sleeping children. This could buy you extra time to sleep in on Christmas morning.
