How to Hunt Deer

Sneak Up Behind Them

Press the Ctrl button to switch into Sneak mode. While in this mode, you can get extremely close to Deer without them noticing you.

Be warned that sneaking does not make you invisible. If a deer sees you, it will be alarmed and run away. Be sure to approach Deer from behind to avoid being seen.

Take a Break to Save Stamina

Sneaking will consume stamina while moving. If you Sneak continuously, you will likely run out of Stamina before you reach the Deer.

Note that standing still will restore Stamina even without leaving Sneak mode, so take breaks occasionally to keep your stamina full while stalking a Deer.

Equip a Strong Weapon

When sneaking, you will deal more damage than normal, so you will likely be able to kill the Deer in a single blow. However, if your weapon is not strong enough, you may fail to kill the Deer, and it will run away, foiling your efforts.

If you're struggling to deal enough damage, go near a lake to collect Flint, then craft a Flint Axe and equip it before you aim to start seriously hunting Deer.

Why Hunt Deer?

Needed to Summon Eikthyr

Deer Trophies, which can be found as a reward for hunting Deer, are required to summon Eikthyr, the first boss.

Although only two Deer Trophies are needed, these will only drop occasionally on killing a Deer, so you'll need to hunt several before you'll get a shot at Eikthyr. Eikthyr is the only way to obtain Hard Antlers, so it's best to hone your hunting skills early on so you can have plenty of Deer Trophies ready for taking him on multiple times.
