Join Our Community How to keep your celery crunchy How to keep your celery crunchy

No one wants limp celery – but inevitably it’s a problem that every celery stalk faces with age.

Search the internet and you’ll find many methods that swear they’re the best way to stop celery going limp, such as wrapping it in tinfoil or standing it in a container of water.

We recruited the University of Otago to put these methods to the test to find the best way to keep your celery crispy.

The results?

If you have a whole bunch of celery, wrap the root end of the celery in a paper towel, place the whole celery in a ziplock bag and squeeze out the excess air.

If you have chopped celery, place it in an airtight container lined with a paper towel.

Celery storage guide

Storing celery this way means that it will last for five days longer than if you just leave it unwrapped in the fridge. Make sure you save the base of the celery when you are cutting it – you can use the base to regrow more celery.

Whilst standing the base of a bunch of celery in water is a good way to help revive it if it has gone limp, it is the worst way to store it as it absorbs so much water that it causes the cells to break down and the stalks disintegrate.

Tip: The leaves of celery are edible. Use them like you would use parsley.
