How to Magnetize a Screwdriver

A screwdriver tip surrounded by screws.

Magnetizing a screwdriver is a much simpler task than you may think. Having a magnetized screwdriver is very useful for a range of DIY activities and projects. Check out our easy 5 step guide below to magnetize any screwdriver.

Why Use a Magnetic Screwdriver?

Using a screwdriver in a tight place or where you have to reach, can be very tricky. This is where magnetic screwdrivers come in handy. A magnetic screwdriver attracts screws so they attach to the end without the need of holding it on. A magnetic screwdriver simply makes life easier, when it comes to reaching for those hidden screws or ones out of reach. There’ll be no more lost screws down the back or scrambling around on the floor for lost screws.

How to Make any Screwdriver Magnetic

There are a number of different ways to magnetize a screwdriver. However, the best and simplest way is completed using a strong magnet. This method is very simple and the effects can last for months or even years, depending on the strength of the magnet. This can also be repeated as many times as needed to ensure all of your screwdrivers remain magnetized.

Step 1

Get a strong magnet, ideally a rare earth magnet or neodymium magnet. The stronger the magnet, the easier it will be to magnetize the screwdriver.

Step 2

Clean your screwdriver shaft by wiping it with a damp cloth or rag to remove any dirt or grime.

Step 3

Slide the magnet slowly down the screwdriver shaft from the handle to the tip repeatedly. Be sure to use the same side of the magnet for each stroke to keep the screwdriver magnetized.

Step 4

Rotate the screwdriver and continue to slide the magnet down the screwdriver shaft from handle to tip.

Step 5

Repeat steps 3 and 4 for as long as needed until screws are attracted to the tip of the screwdriver.
