Living in South Florida means we don't get snow in the wintertime. Fake snow is the next best thing and I have the easiest way to make it. I used to do this with my students a million years ago when I was teaching and now my sons love it too.

You only need a few things that you probably already have at home making this a really cheap or free sensory activity. Whether it's the winter months (December, January, and February) or throughout the year!

All ingredients can be easily found at Dollar Tree if you don't already have them at home. To keep the fake snow fresh and make it last longer, place it in a sealed bin or bag.

Beware, this is going to be messy! But it's so much fun and kids love to play with fake snow.

Sensory Bin Ideas with Fake Snow

While kids can easily play with just the fake snow by itself, creating a sensory bin with it is a bonus! Here are some simple ideas to make it work.

  • Create a winter wonderland with mini bottle brush trees.
  • Add animals that are usually found in cold climates like penguins, polar bears, walruses, etc.
  • Make a Christmas theme using mini trees, gift boxes, Santa, and reindeer.
  • Use cookie cutters to make fun snow shapes.
  • Add blue felt snowflakes and a scoop so kids can find and count the snowflakes.
  • Make tiny snowman accessories and encourage kids to build snowmen.
  • Use measuring spoons, small cups, and other tools to practice picking up the snow with different things.
