Every year bluebirds build bird’s nests in our DIY birdhouses. The bluebirds are so much fun to watch as they build a nest inside the birdhouses and then care for their young. However, the highlight of the experience is watching their offspring learn to fly.

A few years ago, I purchased a bird’s nest that I adore, but it is not a bluebird nest, and I have my heart set on having one. Since I could not find one to purchase, I decided to make a bird’s nest.

This is the store-bought nest I am using for my inspiration; it has some non-natural elements; for this reason, I will not try to duplicate it.

Building a Bird’s Nest

Birds build their nests with natural materials, so I would like to use materials they would have available to use. The nest shape I am going to use is the iconic round bird’s nest. However, each bird species builds its own unique type of nest.

Nesting Materials Supplies

Spanish moss
Spray glue
Scissors
Pine straw
Moss
Sticks
Snips (these are my favorite ones)
Heat gun
Eggs

Spanish moss

Spanish moss is readily available in my yard; however, it is also home to various bugs, so I wanted to use a “clean” Spanish moss.

The first thing I did was pull out a handful of moss. Then I applied a small amount of spray glue. The glue helps to hold the moss together as I shaped it.

Then I add another spray of glue and then start weaving in the sticks.

I purchased the bright green moss, but we have some growing in our yard (however, this one is bug-free).

Last year we built 🌸 window flower boxes, and a bird (not a bluebird) build a next in it.

I noticed in the real bird’s nests bits of straw, so I tried a little raffia as my straw, but I was not too fond of the look, so I removed it.

Instead, I added the pine straw I gathered from my yard in a circular woven pattern. I cut off any long pieces of pine straw.

It is a wonder that wild birds can build nests without hands.

Using a heat gun (this is the one I used) I dried the glue from the top.

Then turning it over to dry the underside of the nest.
