Learn how to make a sunflower wreath out of mesh that adds that perfect amount of summer cheer. This is a quick and easy project perfect for anyone to make.

Hey, y’all! This DIY Sunflower Wreath is ideal for hanging up indoors or under a covered patio all summer long.

If we had to rank the difficulty level for this design, we’d say it’s a solid “anyone can make this one” level. This is a simple wreath great for beginners or seasoned wreath makers, alike!

How To Make A DIY Sunflower Wreath

You can get the paper mesh used for this wreath in a whole multitude of colors. I’ve done these in purple, pink, blue, and yellow and they’re just as much fun in any color.

Have at it friends, because you can make a sunflower for any season!

Supplies Needed For This Deco Mesh Sunflower Wreath

Here’s what you’ll need to gather up in order to make this wreath.

• 2 x wreath forms (Note: Make sure one is smaller than the other so you can stack them nicely.)
• 12″ paper mesh
• Pre-made flower center
• Pipe cleaners
• Floral pins

Larger Sunflower Mesh Wreath Form Instructions: Sunflower Leaves

Follow these steps to create the leaves for your sunflower.

Step 1

Cut your mesh into 12″ x 12″ squares or 10″ x 12″ (whatever size you want).

Step 2

Fold the two opposing corner points into the center and overlap ends just a little bit.

Step 3

Then, you ruffle it to get a nice clean leaf.

Step 4

Attach to the wreath form using twist ties. Repeat this process all around the frame.

Pro Tip: For the leaves, I like to put them face down.

Larger Wreath Instructions: Sunflower Petals

Now, let’s move onto some flowers. When making these flowers, I leave the petals open, facing up. Follow these instructions to make the flower petals.

Step 1

Cut your mesh into 12″ x 12″ squares or 10″ x 12″ (whatever size you want).

Step 2

Fold the two opposing corner points into the center and overlap ends just a little bit.

Step 3

Attach to the wreath form on top of the leaves, using the same twist ties.

Step 4

Go ahead and add two petals to every twist because it’s probably going to need it.

Step 5

When you’re done, go back and separate those petals out.

Smaller Wreath Form Instructions

Follow these steps to add dimension with the second wreath form and put everything together to finish your wreath.

Step 1

Take your smaller frame and attach it in the center using the twist ties from the bigger frame. No zip ties needed, y’all!

Step 2

Now, the pipe cleaners are for the very center and we’re going to run them from one side to the other. So whenever you put these on, make sure you get around a crossbar so you can hold it in place.

This will be the frame that the pre-made flower center sits on.

Step 3

Next, add more yellow mesh petals onto the smaller frame.

Step 4

Attach an additional row of yellow petals to the pipe cleaner frame you just made in step #2 (Go about halfway in and attach it. We’re doing that so we get that layered effect, right?)

Step 5

Attach the floral center using floral pins. Cut pins or avoid pushing them all the way through to avoid sharp ends sticking out.

Step 6

When you’re all done, flip it over and put some hot glue on all those different twists to make sure they don’t come off everywhere it’s touching the base.

Step 7

Add some floral pins at angles through the paper mesh.

Now, it’s secured!

Adding the Final Touches to Your Sunflower Wreath

As with any wreath, the final step is to go back and just kind of separate your leaves and fluff everything out so it looks nice and full.

If you have a ladybug or something you could add one on here, it would be cute! Adding that extra frame really gives that extra depth on your flower.

Do you see how everything is fraying? We’ll fix that too, because once you stop pulling on it…the fraying will stop.

Just take your scissors and trim the flyaways. Mesh just sitting there is not going to unravel. It only unravels when you touch it and mess with it.

Y’all make sure you pull your little yellow petals apart and give your wreath a good ol’ fashioned visual audit. If you see spots where they’re not stacked right on top of each other, it’s not going to look its best.

Patch those bare spots and adjust misaligned petals so you have a high-quality sunflower wreath everyone will be talking about!

DIY Sunflower Wreath

A cheery and fun wreath that's so easy to make anyone can do it.

Materials

• 2 wreath form Make sure one wreath form is smaller than the other.
• 12 10" deco mesh
• flower center
• pipe cleaners
• floral picks

Instructions

• Start with making the sunflower leaves. Cut your mesh into 12″ x 12″ or 10″ x 12″ pieces (choose the size you want).
• Fold the two opposing corner points into the center and overlap ends just a little bit.
• Ruffle it to get a nice clean leaf.
• Use your pipe cleaners to attach to the wreath form and make your way all around the wreath form repeating this process.

Larger Wreath Form: Sunflower Petals

• Cut your mesh into 12″ x 12″ or 10″ x 12″ pieces (you can choose the size you prefer).
• Fold the two opposing corner points into the center and overlap ends just a little bit.
• Use the same pipe cleaners to attach to the wreath form on top of the leaves.
• I recommend going ahead and adding two petals to every pipe cleaner because it will look better.
• When you finish them all, separate the petals out.

Smaller Wreath Form

• Take your smaller frame and attach it in the center using the pipe cleaners from the bigger frame.
• Now, the pipe cleaners are for the very center and we’re going to run them from one side to the other. When you do this technique, make sure you get around a crossbar so you can hold everything in place. This will be the frame that the pre-made flower center sits on.
• Now add more yellow mesh petals onto the smaller frame.
• Attach an additional row of yellow petals to the pipe cleaner frame you just made in step #2 to achieve a layered effect.
• Attach the floral center using floral pins. Cut pins or avoid pushing them all the way through so you don't get sharp ends sticking out.
• Flip it over and put some hot glue on all those different pipe cleaners and everywhere it’s touching the base.
• Add some floral pins at angles through the deco mesh.
