Want to make a Firework Rocket to power your Elytra? The Elytra are wings that can be found in the end-game of Minecraft and are used to glide from a great height. Firework rockets come in handy if you want to increase the speed of your flight (or to avoid death from fall damage when gliding too low too fast). Here's how to make a Firework Rocket in Minecraft Java and Bedrock Edition.

Craft Fireworks to Fly in Minecraft

To make Firework Rockets in Minecraft, combine Paper + Gunpowder at a crafting table. To increase the flight duration, add 1 or 2 extra gunpowder. If you want to add a visual effect, add any Firework Star.

Steps

Section 1 of 2:

Crafting a Firework Rocket

  1. Step 1 Gather your resources. 1 Gather your resources. Firework Rockets need gunpowder and paper for crafting. If you want to create a Firework Rocket with a visual effect, you'll need to craft a Firework Star as well.
    • Gunpowder drops from Creepers, but it is not a 100% drop rate. You'll likely need to kill several Creepers to net one or two lumps of gunpowder. If you plan to craft a lot of Firework Rockets, consider building a Creeper farm.
    • Paper can be crafted from Sugar Cane. You can use three pieces of Sugar Cane to craft 3 papers. If you plan to craft a lot of Firework Rockets, consider building an automatic Sugar Cane farm.
  2. Step 2 Interact with a crafting table. 2 Interact with a crafting table. Right-click the table (PC), tap the table (PE), or press the left trigger while facing the table (consoles). Advertisement
  3. Step 3 Place the paper in the crafting table. 3 Place the paper in the crafting table. Click the paper, then click an empty space in the crafting table grid.[1]
    • In Minecraft PE, tap the paper icon and then tap a square in the crafting grid.
  4. Step 4 Place the gunpowder in the crafting table. 4 Place the gunpowder in the crafting table. Click the gunpowder, then click an empty space in the crafting table's grid.[2]
    • In Minecraft PE, tap the gunpowder icon and then tap an empty square in the crafting grid.
    • You can create Firework Rockets with different flight durations depending on the amount of gunpowder you add.
      • 1 gunpowder = flight duration 1
      • 2 gunpowder = flight duration 2
      • 3 gunpowder = flight duration 3
      • If you plan to use Firework Rockets with your Elytra, it's best to use 1 gunpowder for flight duration 1 as this gives you more control when flying and takes less resources. However, longer flight durations can come in handy if you're flying somewhere relatively straight without many sharp turns.
  5. Step 5 Place your star(s) in the crafting table (optional). 5 Place your star(s) in the crafting table (optional). If you crafted a Firework Star to add a visual effect, you can place it in any empty square in the crafting grid. Skip this step if you're just creating a rocket without an explosion.
    • In Minecraft PE, tap your star, tap an empty square in the crafting grid, and repeat with any other colors that you want to use.
    • On consoles, press the left or right trigger until you open the rocket-shaped tab on the left side of the screen, press the right shoulder button twice to open the rocket section, press right on the D-pad to select the "Star" field, and press Y or triangle to add your star.
  6. Step 6 Retrieve the rockets. 6 Retrieve the rockets. Hold down Shift and click the rocket stack to the right of the crafting grid to move the rockets into your inventory. You can fire off your rockets by selecting them in your equip bar and then selecting the ground in front of you.
    • In Minecraft PE, tap the rocket stack and then tap your inventory.
    • On consoles, press A or X to create the rockets and place them in your inventory.

Crafting a Firework Star

  1. Step 1 Obtain a dye source. 1 Obtain a dye source. To add a visual effect to your fireworks, you'll need dye. You can find the following colors of dye in nature:
    • Red - Collect any red flower, then place it on a crafting table.
    • Yellow - Collect any yellow flower, then place it on a crafting table.
    • Green - Collect cactus, then smelt the cactus in a furnace.
    • Blue - Mine Lapis Lazuli blocks, then smelt the Lapis Lazuli ore in a furnace. These are dark-blue-freckled rocks that are usually found quite deep underground.
  2. Step 2 Open your crafting table. 2 Open your crafting table. Right-click the table (PC), tap the table (PE), or face the table and press the left trigger (console). The crafting table interface will open.
    • If you're crafting green or blue dye, open the furnace instead.
  3. Step 3 Place your dye source in the crafting table. 3 Place your dye source in the crafting table. Click and drag the dye source (e.g., a flower) into any square in the crafting table. If you're smelting dye, the source must instead go into the top square, and you'll have to put your fuel source in the bottom square.
    • In Minecraft PE, tap the dye source, then tap the crafting table. If you're smelting, tap the source and then tap the "Input" square, then tap your fuel source and tap the "Fuel" square.
    • On consoles, press the right shoulder button six times, select the "Dye" tab, scroll down to select your dye, and press A or X. If you're smelting, select the dye and tap Y or triangle, then repeat with the fuel source.
  4. Step 4 Retrieve the dye. 4 Retrieve the dye. Click the dye to select it. If you smelted dye, hold down Shift and click the dye, then exit the furnace and open the crafting table.
    • In Minecraft PE, tap the dye, then tap your inventory.
    • On consoles, the dye goes straight to your inventory when you create it. If you smelted the dye, select it and press Y.
  5. Step 5 Craft your firework star. 5 Craft your firework star. Place one lump of gunpowder in any square of the crafting grid, then place your dye in any empty square of the crafting grid.[3]
    • On consoles, you'll select the firework-shaped tab on the left side of the screen by pressing a trigger repeatedly, then scroll down until you find the correct dye and press A or X.
  6. Step 6 Retrieve your star. 6 Retrieve your star. Now that the star is in your inventory, you can create the firework rocket itself.
