You will need

  • A piece of cardboard
  • Coloured wool
  • Scissors
  • Googly eyes (optional)

Step one

Starting to make a pom pom

First, make two identical templates from cardboard in the shape shown above. You can easily do this by drawing around a glass for the big circle, then drawing around a coin for the centre. It should look like a small doughnut. Cut out your templates using scissors, cutting a 1-2cm slit at the edge as shown.

Place the templates together and start wrapping your wool all around the edges, feeding the wool through the slit each time.

Step two

Step two making a pom pom

Keep wrapping until you’ve nearly run out of space on your cardboard template. Cut off the wool, then cut an extra length of wool about 25cm long. Hold the middle of your pom-pom and carefully use scissors to cut all around the edge, between the two templates.

Step three

Place your extra length of wool between the two templates all the way around, and tie to secure.

Step 4 making pom pom

You can now remove your cardboard templates and fluff up the wool to reveal your finished pom-pom. If you want to make a pom-pom monster, use PVA glue to add a pair of googly eyes.
