Making a left turn in traffic, especially outside of a dedicated turning lane, can be a harrowing experience. Because cyclists traditionally stay to the right of a travel lane, turning left at an intersection often means turning in front of a car. But there are a few solid ways to responsibly make this turn in traffic, and ensure drivers are aware they aren't the only ones on the road.

Follow these directions to make riding in traffic much safer.

On Quiet Roads

1) Look behind you for a clear break in traffic. Plan ahead: You should be looking behind you at least 25 yards before reaching the intersection, or you risk running out of road. If that happens, stop on the shoulder or curb until it’s safe to continue.

2) When you see a break, signal your intention to the driver, and wait for confirmation that they see you—they might blink their lights, wave, slow down, or hold eye contact. (Learn about why waving to drivers is weirdly controversial.)

3) Move to the center of the turn lane, if there is one. If not, move to the left third of the travel lane.

On High-Traffic Roads

Avoid having to merge by using a two-step maneuver known as a Copenhagen or box turn.

1) Ride straight through the intersection, then stop at the streetcorner.

2) Turn your bike in the direction you want to go, and proceed only when you have the right of way.
