Water Bottle Bong DIY Tutorial: Quick Steps
Remove the lid from a clean 17 oz (0.5 L) plastic water bottle.
Cut a 2.5 in (5 cm) square of aluminium foil.
Place the foil square on top of the bottle’s mouth and press the edges down.
Press your thumb into the center of the foil to create a bowl shape.
Poke 5-6 needle-sized holes into the foil.
Poke a slightly larger hole in the side of the bottle, just above the label.
Pack the bowl, light it, and smoke.

1 Get a plastic bottle and remove the lid. You will want to use a bottle that is just the right size for bong-making purposes. A standard 17-ounce (0.5 L) plastic water bottle should do the trick. Remove the lid of the water bottle. Set it aside. You will not need it.[1]XResearch source
Water bottles are better than soda bottles because they won’t leave any sticky residue.
You can remove the label from the bottle if you want.
You don’t have to leave any water in the bottle. However, if you want the bong to stand upright, you can leave some in to weigh it down.
This is not a traditional bong, because it does not force the smoke through the water; however, it can be made quickly and easily compared to the traditional option.
2 Tear off a small piece of aluminum foil. This foil piece will serve as the bowl. It should be approximately 2.5 inches by 2.5 inches (5 cm by 5 cm). You should use thick or “heavy duty” aluminum foil for best results.[2]XResearch source
If you only have lightweight aluminum foil, fold it over to make it thicker before forming a 2.5-inch by 2.5-inch square.
The piece of aluminum foil should be large enough to cover the mouth of the bottle and fold over the edges. Look at your bottle; if 2.5 inches by 2.5 inches (5 cm by 5 cm) doesn’t seem large enough, tear off a larger piece of aluminum foil.

3 Apply the foil in a bowl shape around the mouth of the water bottle. Wrap the edges of the aluminum foil around the top of the open water bottle. Press your thumb down to extend the aluminum foil into the center of the opening. It should form a depressed bowl shape that curves into the top of the water bottle.[3]XResearch source
Make the bowl depression large enough to contain your herb, but don’t push down so hard that you tear the aluminum foil.

4 Poke 5 or 6 needle-sized holes in the aluminum foil bowl. 5 or 6 holes are probably adequate. Use a needle, straight pin, toothpick, or other slender object to poke the holes.
Make sure that the holes are far enough apart that they do not break the bowl.
Be careful not to poke holes so large that they break the bowl.
5 Punch a small hole in the side of the bottle, above the label. Poke another hole into the outside portion of the water bottle, just above where the label stops. This is where you will need to place your mouth.
Don’t try to make the hole too big. Gently poke a hole with your needle or straight pin, then wiggle it around a bit to make the hole a little bigger.
6 Make the side hole bigger with a pair of scissors. Make the hole approximately 1 inch (2.5 cm) in diameter to start with. Be careful not to rip the bottle; press down on the hole to indent the plastic slightly, then gently enlarge the hole.
Start by making the hole a little on the small side. You can always enlarge it later if you need to, but you can’t make it smaller.
7 Pack the bowl. Simply place some of your favorite herb in the aluminum foil bowl. Don’t overdo it; you can always add more later, but you don’t want it spilling over the sides.[6]XResearch source
If pieces of your herb fall through the bowl, then the holes you punched are too large. Take the aluminum foil off and try again, this time making smaller holes.
8 Put your mouth over the hole on the side and light the bowl. Cover the hole on the side with your mouth. Light the bowl and let the smoke fill the water bottle bong.[7]XResearch source
9 Inhale gently when you remove the lighter from the bowl. As you light the bowl and smoke fills the water bottle, set down the lighter and gently inhale the smoke in the bottle.[8]XResearch source

1 Obtain a plastic bottle. Some people like to use a two-liter (67 ounce) bottle, but a standard 17-ounce (0.5 L) water bottle can also work just fine.[9]XResearch source
Remove the lid from the bottle and discard it.
2 Take apart a plastic pen. You will need the pen shaft to work as a smoke shaft. Any plastic pen that can be taken apart to leave a hollow cylinder will work. Disassemble the pen so that you’re only left with the hollow outer tube.[10]XResearch source
3 Cut a hole in the side of the bottle. Using scissors or another tool, gently poke a small hole (just large enough to fit the width of the pen shaft) in the side of the bottle, approximately one-third of the way up from the bottom.[11]XResearch source
4 Insert the pen shaft into the hole. Test the size of the hole by inserting the pen in the hole at a downward angle. If the hole is too big, it will be hard to get a tight seal.[12]XResearch source
If it turns out that your hole is too big, you can still salvage the bong. Just place pieces of tape where the pen shaft meets the bottle to make a tighter seal.
5 Pierce another small hole in the opposite side of the bottle. On the opposite side of the bottle, make another small hole (about the size of a pencil eraser). This will be used as the carb when you are smoking.[13]XResearch source
6 Attach a bowl with a metal socket and duct tape. Affix a metal socket to the outside end of the pen shaft. Use another few layers of duct tape to make a seal. The socket is your bowl.[14]XResearch source
You can use any sort of metal socket that is the right size. Look around your house for a suitable object. If you can’t find anything, visit a hardware store, where you’ll find lots of possibilities.
7 Fill the bong about ⅕ of the way up with water. Pour water from the top of the bottle into the bottom of the bong. Fill it approximately 1/5 full.
8 Pack the bowl. Simply place some of your favorite herb in the metal socket bowl. Don’t overdo it; you can always add more later, but you don’t want it spilling over the sides.[15]XResearch source
9 Position the bong with your mouth at the top and the bowl facing away from you. Place your mouth at the top of the bottle, where the lid was. Tip the bong so that the bowl is facing away from your body.
10 Light the bowl. Using a lighter, ignite your herb and begin to suck in slowly to force the smoke through the water. Make sure to place a finger over the carb hole while doing this.[16]XResearch source
