Late in the 17th century and thereafter, Epsom salt was one of the most popular medicinal drugs. The people who used it did not know exactly why it was so beneficial, but they did understand that in some way it was good for health and promoted longevity. Supporters of epsom salt bath advocates that soaking in epsom salt allows the minerals to “draw out” toxins from the body.
Magnesium absorption is the biggest benefit of an Epsom salt bath. When Epsom salt (magnesium sulfate) is used in salt baths, magnesium is absorbed directly into the skin and directly impacts processes in the skin and body as a whole.
In a warm bath, our vessels in our skin dilate and allow for enhanced absorption of magnesium salts throughout the skin. It is a little known fact that magnesium is much better absorbed transdermally rather than through the GI tract and this is why people are using magnesium sulfate (Epsom salts) in a bath or soak.
What is Epsom Salt
Epsom salt has reportedly been used for over 400 years, ever since an English farmer discovered that the “bitter water” in his wells had remarkable healing properties on skin rashes and injuries. Known as Magnesium Sulfate or Epsomite, Epsom salt is essentially magnesium, sulfate, and oxygen.
It gets its name from the town of Epsom in Surrey, England, where it was originally discovered and has an appearance similar to table salt and is often dissolved in baths, which is why you may also know it as “bath salt.” While it looks similar to table salt, Epsom salt is made of both magnesium and sulfate while table salt is sodium.
Benefits of Epsom Salt Bath
Epsom salt is made of magnesium and sulfate. Magnesium is known to increase relaxation, reduce inflammation, and aid in muscle and nerve function while sulfate is said to help with recovery and detoxification. Here are some benefits of using epsom salt in bath.
